Chopin Scherzi
on: November 28, 2005, 06:47:27 PM
I'm looking for some opinions on who's recorded the best set. I have Rubinstein's, which I think are great, but are there any others out there worth hearing?

Cheers,
Jas

Of course there are!!!! :)

My favourites: Pogorelich, Richter, Pletnev, Arrau, Argerich (2nd and 3rd),
                       Kissin (2nd and 4th)

I like Ashkenazy's best, although I am curious about hearing the Garrick Ohlsson set, which I have not.

Ashkenazy also has an old recording of the 4th scherzo that is truly romantic, in the best old fashioned way.

Rubinstein's are beautiful, but technically weak (as if he would care).
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)

Of Ashkenazy's recordings, I have only heard his scherzo in Bbm -- and of all the recordings I've heard of it, I think it mirrors my thoughts on the piece the closest.

Ditto!!!

Stunning virtuoisty and heartfelt lyricism.  One of my favourite Chopin CD's.  My favourite track on the disc however is the piano solo version of the Op. 2 variations on "La ci darem la mano".

Also I quite enjoy Valerie Tryon's take on the Scherzo's.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Yeah, that was probably a stupid question! :)

Thanks for the recs, everyone! The only ones I'm not too familiar with are Pletnev and Kissin. I haven't heard anything by Yundi Li (I'm a bit behind the times...) or Ohlsson and I've never heard of Valerie Tryon!
But I'll keep these in mind. :)
