Australian Piano Competitions
on: December 04, 2005, 11:53:45 AM
Hi everyone!

I was wondering if there are many Australians on the board, and I wanted to see what competitions you guys know about at a national level.

I only really know of the lev vlassenko, yamaha comp and the symphony australia awards. Are there any more?

I want to go a bit higher than the usual eisteddfods etc but am having trouble finding something in Australia that is for the  Late teens to 30 age bracket that isnt the Sydney International which is WAY out of my league at the moment!

Thanks!

- Vanessa

Hepzibah Menuhin when they decide to do it.  Should be soon.
David Paul Landa use to be separate, now I think it's tied in with YPA.
Geelong awards which just closed.
MBS Young Performer Award.

The music universities all have competitions which are at a higher level than most eisteddfods. However the politics behind university competitions can really get to you, usually they will award their doctorate student the 1st prize so they can get all the media coverage etc.

You cannot say that all eisteddfods are weaker in level, you will find country eisteddfods weaker and the ones closer to main cities much stronger. For instance here in West Australia the Bunbury eisteddfod (about 200kms from Perth) is much weaker than the Fremantle (about 20 Kms from Perth). I went to watch the Bunbury Eisteddfods Open Piano competition and laughed (on the inside) at a lot of the performances and it didn't surprise me that the jury didn't award a 1st prize.

Which university are you talking about? No universities in NSW do this.

...a bit of contradiction here? And I don't think anyone implies that "all eisteddfods are weaker in level". For a start, I know of universities offering music performance degrees who really shouldn't. Agreed re: the spread of standard of eisteddfods.

David Paul Landa is a travelling scholarship awarded biannually thru the YPA. I think you automatically qualify if you win the keyboard section? It's a really nice sum...

Yeah this is great because I also wanted to know about the different competitions you could enter. I know of one called the Sydney International Piano Competition, but because I've taken piano up at the age of 15/16 I thought that I would probably never really be young enough to enter any of these competitions.
