Most recorded piece- records, statistics, anyone?
on: December 06, 2005, 06:39:04 AM
I was wondering if there was a table of statistics somewhere covering the top 10 or 100 or whatever most recorded pieces in classical music.  I'd be interested to see just HOW MANY different recordings there are of the old warhorses, such as Tchaikovsky's first concerto or the chopin etudes, etc.

I would guess there has to be at least 300 tchaik 1's, and that's my bet for the most recorded piano concerto.

I made a very similar question some time ago, and it appears that the most recorded piano piece is actually "FUR ELISE" (more than 300 commercial recordings available, as i seem to recall). This was quite surprising to me, because i had the idea that being a so overplayed piece by early students, it wasnt so often recorded...but, after all, even the great Brendel recorded his version of it !!!   :) :)

By the way, "Moonlight" sonata was up there too.

Another that will be right up there would be Pachelbel's "Canon In D."

This famous canon is one section of a larger work, a partita.  It was written for a small string ensemble-- I believe, 3 violins and 3 continuos (string bass).  So all piano arrangements currently on the market are transcriptions.   Over the years, I have managed to collect at least 6 or 7 different arrangements for solo piano.  Several are godawful.   A couple are pretty decent.

At the library, I recently checked out two CD albums -- each was a collection of arrangements of "Canon in D."  Many for piano, but some for piano duet, for Pan pipes, for flute, for chamber orchestra, for violin, for choir, and on and on.  A few of these were very impressive, most were borderline junky.

Each album had about 14 to 18 respective recordings of the canon, and the two albums-- from two entirely different music studios -- did NOT have the same recordings.  So between the two recordings, one found about 25 previously recorded tracks of this piece.

For solo piano of this piece, I personally like the Robert Schultz arrangement best.

It's not really a shock if you think how many crappy classical CD's are turned out "classic's for lovers", "Best of Beethoven" "Romantic Adagio's" and so forth...
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Pachelbel's Canon in D was composed for 3 violins, cello & harpsichord, in Sostenuto tempo. The facts that the most played versions are on a string quartet, for weddings (Double of the original tempo=incredibly slow) and crappy arragements for any kind of instrument, have made this beautiful piece become way underrated.

Chopin's Raindrop Prelude? That seems to pop up quite a lot. Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca does, too.
