My real name is Eleanor, which depending which version you like is either a French version of the Greek name Helen, meaning 'light', or a Provencale version of Alienor. I prefer the second, as I'm named for Eleanor of Acquitane. She was named for her mother, Aenor, and known as alia Aenor ('the other Aenor') to avoid confusion. Aenor is a Germanic name which is so archaic there isn't much of a consensus on its meaning, two possible roots are feminine versions of Einar (warrior) or Eino (awe).
My nickname, Elspeth, is - wait for it - an old Scottish version of Elizabeth, which is itself a Greek version of a Hebrew name meaning 'my God is an oath.' My grandfather's nickname for me is Elizabeth - why, I've no idea!
