What do you mean 'what are exams'? Exams are examinations.

Definitions of  exam on the Web:

    * Official exercise designed to evaluate knowledge and skills, and covering the contents of a course or a program of studies.

In regards to a piano exam, although it may vary from board to board, you will usually be examined on:

1) Pieces
2) Scales
3) Sightreading
4) Musicianship Tests
5) General Knowledge

Your Teacher will be able to enter you for whichever exam he/she feels you are ready to take. If you are self-taught, you will have to contact your preferred examination board and find out how to enter yourself.
