I absolutely love Prokofiev
on: December 20, 2005, 04:40:23 AM
even though I've heard relatively little by him. What should I listen to, excluding Piano Sonatas #5, 6, 7, the Piano Concertos #2 + 3, and the Toccata?

Piano Concerto #1 seconded. Marvelous piece. #4 is also kinda goofy and fun to listen to.

I'd also recommend the Feria from Sorabji's transcription of the Ravel Rhapsodie Espagnole if you like Prokofiev's sort of style (you can find it on Naxos).

BIS, rather. But it's on naxos.com. Catalogue search Sorabji. It is on the "Piano transcriptions of Ravel/Bach/Chopin" CD.

Sorry to raise false hope there. :)

The ending of the Feria always makes me smile sheepishly for some reason. Maybe that's just me though. I need to get my hands on the score of that piece, out of curiosity.

I really like Complete Piano music in 5 volumes, pianist Boris Berman (on Chandos Records). Those include his sweet children's pieces, Visions Fugitives, ballet trascriptions, you name it. Also Vladimir Sofronitsky plays some of the above (Urania). If you go to www.Arkivmusic.com you'll find quite a selection there.

You HAVE to listen Prokofiev´s own performance of his 3rd concerto.
