Trumpet !  Way cool!  I play clarinet in an adult band here in Portland - the Oregon Symphonic Band.  Piano is really my main instrument.  Let me know waht it's like to take up the violin as an adult - I have never played a stringed instrument, and they fascinate me, especially the violin - the position is SO unnatural to me.  Must work okay, though.  I don't hear much griping about it.

haha, Well i wouldn't call myself old (i'm 19) but i'm pretty old I suppose to start on a new instrument. I have also been fascinated by string instruments, especially the cello, although I just invested in a violin, and I'm starting. It sounds bloody AWFUL at the moment that is, i'll get the hang of it. (I hope). :p I also play the clari, and I know how to play guitar a bit, and i played recorder in junior school :) although it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up a brass instrument soon, i'm thinkin of trumpet too. you see, i want to become a conductor or a music director, :)

what kind of violin did you buy?

The trumpet was fairly easy to learn. As long as you have the lip movements than your good to go.

Well, I don't actually play the piano, my wife does.  :-/ We're looking to get her a piano after not having one for many years.  I do play the guitar though ;D. I play mainly fingerstyle on a steel string guitar. I have several but my favorite is my Taylor 514ce. This is an auditorium size guitar with mahogany back and sides and a red cedar top.  It has a melow tone with plenty of individual note clarity. It frets and plays like a dream.

BTW, Lidwig, you're really never too old to start a new instrument IMHO.  Granted, if you start playing at a late age you may never become truely great, but you can become accomplished enough to play well and enjoy the music.  I played guitar a little when I was young but didn't pick it up again until I was 43 years old.  I won't be any competition to the likes of Doyle Dykes, but I do play well enough that others enjoy hearing it.  And it is one of the most enjoyable things I've every done.

At any rate, since I seem to be the real dinosaur here  ;) I'll quit typing.

Sincerely,
Joe martin

This is funny, but only to me!!  I was never in band in high school.  Piano was my life.  (Now, God is my life--piano is just a part of it.  A BIIIIGGGG part, but it is only secondary.)  When I went to college, I was on music scholarship, and it was a requirement that I participate in band.  So what dumb thing do I decide to do???  I choose the FRENCH HORN.  Duh!  I was awful!  Because that was in my past, hopefully to never enter my life again, I can talk about it and laugh about it!!  8)

Hey, I have a new question for all of you--what kind of piano do you have?  I have a Kawai grand.  I did have a Mason & Hamlin console, but got the grand when I started college.  I hated to give up the Mason & Hamlin, but I absolutely LOVE my Kawai!

Well, of course I play piano, and I also play violin, cello, trumpet (a VERY little bit), Xylophones, bass and acoustic guitar (just a few lines, and basic chords) and the accordion.

And, I have a 6'1" Young Chang grand that I just got in September!!! I just adore it. It's a nice change, because I had a REALLY REALLY BAD digital that was like ten years old for like forever before I got my grand!

Love,

Sarah

I have played the didgeridoo, the spoons and different kinds of leaves found in the national parks of New South Wales. However these instuments do not match the prestige nor the range of sounds of the piano.

The leaves thing started when I watched in amazement a guy win big money on a televised talent quest playing  classical music on leaves. The brilliant pianist  who was competing against him was not impressed with the result!

Losing isnt easy,  especially when the guy who beats you has never had a music lesson and picked his instrument off a tree just before he performed.

LOL at above...

Yeah I've played a didgeridoo too, but it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth.  :o

Other than that, and back to the world of real instruments, I play piano, saxophone, drums, and starting clarinet... other than that... I don't think decks and turntables count...

hehe, joe_martin79, just exactly how old are ya? =p That's right, I know that no one's ever too old to start learning an instrument, but it is more difficult and time consuming, just like languages I suppose... but I don't have the time now, I can play the piano, (really?) and the clarinet, I also can play a little percussion, guitar, and I'm "trying" out the violin.... and also Fotios_Darcey, I wish I could have seen the pianist face when the results were announced... man, wish I could play the leaf too...:(

But I couldn't really get into it so I gave up

:)

i play the piano, violin and i take voice. i can also play the recorder but im not great.

do you think that if you play more instruments it helps you more? i know a friend who moved onto so many instruments, dropped them when she disliked them and now she has "discovered" the trombone and she is absolutely brilliant at it!!

isnt it amazing at what some people do!!

Different instruments do help...like if you learned a transposing instrument you'd learn to transpose fluently.  And if you learned the flute you'd be able to read very high notes easily on the score.  But if you learn too many instruments, then you can't achieve the same level with each of them as you would if you only concentrated on a couple - there wouldn't be enough time to practice all of them.

No I only play one - the piano.
Where did you hear I played three?
I used to take the violin, and I play the ocarina sometimes...
But the ocarina is sort of a simple instrument and there's only so much you can do on it.
But it's still fun :D

Sorry for ressurecting such an old post, but..... I only play piano now, but I'm sort of considering learning violin. Is violin as hard as some people say?

Hey mosis, that is an awesome instrument! I didn't see this thread before, actually that technique reminds me of alot of traditional instruments of other cultures! Like the sliding and the vibratos! Its almost like painting! I wonder what the artwork would look like if you traced the steps in the performance!

btw, so I notice that the vertical changes the tone and the registers of the note while the horizontal obviously changes the notes... Are there any different settings on a computer or another part of the instrument that also changes the sustain, level of fuzzy sounds (yeah really professional wording here), the delay/echos etc...? Wouldn't it be cool to like play polyphonically as well! with like several of those panels/keyboards!!! (sorta like Yanni! haha)

very interesting, like to know more =) I should get one! (or I should also perhaps do practice on the other instruments in my house which i don't play :()

My main instrument used to be the guitar.

That Haken Keyboard would be a nice third instrument.  Next time I have $5000 laying around mayble I'll look into it ;).  I saw some info on it at:

Flute, piccolo, clarinet and sing. I will be acquiring an alto or a bass flute when I can afford them... they're very expensive but the sound is wonderful.

My piano at home is unfortunately a digital... I live in a modern flat with paper-thin walls, I don't think my neighbours would appreciate listening to me playing scales! I'm lucky though, I work in a theatre and a concert hall so can sneak into the recital rooms if I get to work before rehearsals or concerts kick off and play Steinway grands... I think I need a bigger house!

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
