glenn gould and ronald mcdonald
on: December 23, 2005, 02:12:58 AM
did anyone ever see how glenn gould sits in a chair when he is not playing piano? the one where he crosses his legs and his arms are near his head? isnt it creepy that ronald mcdonald also sits in the same position when he is at a bench at a mcdonalds place. they must be related :)

I remember noticing a similarity to Gould when I was listening to Ronald's WTC.  Some shared blood might explain it.

Lol! Wow, to think of Gould when looking at Ronald McDonald...you must think about piano related issues alot!

Actually, how did Glenn Gould die? I'm getting a biography of him for xmas, but i noticed yesterday when i was reading a CD inlay of a recording of his (Goldberg Variations) that he was only 50 when he died....young....

I also noticed on the recording how Gould hums along for most of the variations! It's strangely comforting to hear him humming in the background and quite eerie too. Did he always hum along to his performances?

He had a stroke and died about five days later. He had been a virtual recluse for several years, rarely going outside or seeing anyone, he ate hardly anything but scrambled eggs and did not exercise. He was also medicating himself for a legion of maladies, many doctors thought him to be a hypochondriac but there must have been something really wrong. He measured his blood pressure about 30 to 50 times a day, and the pills he took were to adjust it. Bad idea...look at photographs of him as a young man and even into the 70's he looks OK, then around 1978 you can see the physical deteriation in photographs.

I enjoy the humming too, although sometimes it gets obstreperous. He is often critcized for this, but he is far from being the only pianist who does this; others include Rachmaninov, (Grieg Waltz op.12 #2  mm.51-52) Helene Grimaud ("Tempest" Sonata slow mvt.) Richter (Brahms Ballade in g minor op.118 #3).

The humming is more evident in his later recordings, I guess once your a living legend you can do what you want. I expect your book will provide you with lots of interesting info, in this guy's case there's a lot. But briefly, yes; his stage presence and behavior are among the most bizarre and unusual in piano history...

GG seems to be the best at the humming. his humming makes sense at least (maybe off tuned though). I watched some stupid idiot perform a mozart concerto once. she would hum the worst notes at the worst times. If that wasn't bad enough she would look at the audience and make the nastiest faces when humming.
