hand span and shoe size
on: December 31, 2005, 08:01:49 PM
ok.  everyone left me again...(after spending a day in one of those mopeds yesterday at the franklin institute - which was fun) and being bored i have been looking at my hands and feet.

is there any correlation between your hand span size and your shoe size?  my fingers could be stretched to 8 1/2" and my shoe size is 8 1/2.  so, could i guess your hand span if you told me your shoe size?  is yours comparable?

Regretfully, I cannot reach my feet because my stomach is in the way.

Give me until the end of March and I will let you know.

no, no, no.  you don't have to reach your feet.  just sit down ok.  i'll explain this again.

look at your hands *(guess or measure the hand span with fingers outstretched)
does the inch measurement match your shoe size?

now, put both your hands around your neck, thumb to thumb and pinky to pinky.

My shoe size is 13. I WISH my hands were that big.

They actually stretch 9 inches, which is about a major tenth. So you couldn't guess mine based on shoe size alone.

do you think i could make money in a circus doing this?

There are times when i would like to put my hands around your neck ;D

no one would ever know if we got one of those 'perfect-fit' pianos.  don't worry - napoleon was a small man - but he made up for it with his ego.

you know, now that i think about it...i've seen zillions of piano competitors with hands that looked our size.  i don't know how many actually won - but, no matter.

now i also have the age factor running against me.  maybe cruiseliner playing, restaurant bluing, and assisted living gigs.  who knows, we may be discovered and get to play other places we want, too.  longwood gardens sounds kind of nice, to me.  no one says that winning competitions is the only way to get a foot in the door.

ok i put my hand against my foot and it reached the same length as to my 4th toe, which is approximately 2 or 3cm shorter than my big toe. so not quite there but close enough- my feet are an 8 1/2 or 9, and i can reach a minor 10th...

My widest hand span between 1 and 5 is 8.5 inches. This is just wide enough to allow me to play white key or black key tenths, but not the longer white to black tenths.

HOWEVER...

Anatomically, my hands and feet are very different. My hands a quite small with thin, long fingers. My feet are short and very broad. Not sure what this means - probably that I am a complete freak of nature!

EDIT: Wow, I just measured my foot and it is exactly 9 inches in length. So pretty similar to my span, yes.

hahah, it's true. We make up for it by taking over the world.

...Or, are the tallies compensating for their lack of world domination? :o

pianistimo, a woman's shoe size 9 is about the same as a man's size 7...so if a man had a hand-span of 8 1/2 inches, his shoe size 9by your hypothesis) would be a woman's 8 1/2 or man's 6 1/2.

thanks for clearing that up abel88.  (you've just blown my hypothesis)  you see - music is a science.  and, as for all those european sizes - you just have to try them on.

why doesn't everyone just measure their feet against their hand span and see if they're the same or remotely similar?

When I saw the title, I wondered for a minute -- a female friend of mine says she knows all she needs to know by looking at hands and feet.   :-[ I don't know what that means, cough

it wouldn't be remotely close I think. My hand span isn't nearly as big as when I stretch it against something, like the side of my desk. I remember seeing some movie where they said that your feet are as long as the distance between your wrist and elbow, that seems to work better.

I doubt if the correlation is that strict, BUT..... I have small feet - women's size 5, and my right hand barely reaches an octave.

How's the diet coming thalbergmad?
