I can't read when I'm in a bus/car. I get nauseaus (spelling?).

However, I'm listening to an audiobook of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Uh, that is not reading. It does have artistic merit, though.... ;)

I am reading stuff I should have read long ago, but never got around to.  Just finished "Don Quixote."  I'm probably going to start cracking some books on Eastern Orthodox theology.

the book in Job where God says 'where were you when...' and then lists a lot of stuff that would be hard to know unless one was around when it happened.  i tried to read it carefully to sort of coordinate with Genesis, but it's beyond me to know if the earth could be 6000+ - years or more.  i do know it says 'in six days God created the heavens and the earth' but for all we know - it could be a sort of recreation since He was hovering over the waters and only in chapter 9 of Genesis made the boundaries for the sea.  I'm curious what He says about the hail in Job, too, because it says it's reserved for the 'day of distress.'  is that our times?  We are having massive wildfires in the south  (texas and oklahoma), and flooding in northern california on a level hardly seen before.  we live in trying times.  just want to know what's coming next!  the january deadline of hotel living for the homeless katrina victims is being extended thankfully.

I don't think God is merciless, but the bible does say some things about how He will bring it all to a close and usher in a new age.

musical reading?  well, i've been trying to understand Dr. Widmer's views on what makes an expressive pianist (ala analyzing Horowitz's playing and many other pianists).

not to scare anyone, but was watching a pbs documentary (i think it was pbs) on the likelihood of another tsunami possibly around the vancouver/seattle area and calif. coast.  of course, the east coast isn't immune to stuff, too.  these hurricanes are getting mean.  each of the past few years seems to bring out stiffer winds and flooding.

don't know if rebuilding louisiana will be a good idea or not.  maybe they'll have to build farther inland - so the structures will remain sound?  i'm glad my husband likes hurricane ties.  most houses don't put them in the garage, but he, being an amateur strength factor measurer - bought a box of hurricane ties and screwed them all over the place in the garage.  i thought he was nuts at first.  but, you never know!

I usually read 4 or 5 books at the same time, a little of everything so I don't get bored. Right now it's "The Autobiography of Malcom X " (rereading, last read in high school) "Ruled Britannia" by Harry Turtledove (alternate history, in this case set in 1597, 9 years after the Spanish conquest of Britain, centering on guerilla rebel William Shakespeare) "The Teaching of Buddha", Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, and to fall asleep various "Archie" comics digests...

"The Quantum and the Lotus," English translation of "L'infini dans la Paume en la Main," by Matthieu Ricard & Trinh Xuan Thuan. It's a book detailing the conversations of a Buddhist philosopher and an astrophysicist on the findings of modern science and the comparisons to Buddhism. It's absolutely fascinating, but it's pretty heavy.

these days is dostoievsky ''crime and punishment'' on repertoire...i'm curious what's everyone else reading?

That was probably the most intense book I've read, I think I read the last 150 pgs in one sitting, couldn't put it down. Read any other Dostoyevsky?

I got bored of King as well, the last one of his novels I'd read was like a chore. I still like his writing style, very colorful, but the plotlines start to seem a little pointless. My favorite of the Dark Tower series was the 4th book, Wizard and Glass.

I haven't had a whole lotta time for literature the past few months. I'll bet unplugging the internet would free up a lotta time :P I've been gradually chipping away at Rosen's - The Classical Style. Pretty thick stuff, but I'm finding it very interesting, and useful

Interestingly, I've recently finished both of those. The Virgin's Lover is by Philippa Gregory. Have you read anything else by her? The Other Boleyn Girl and The Queen's Fool are great books. And the Schonberg is fascinating.

I'm currently re-reading The Lord of the Rings. I'm making the most of being able to read fiction before I go back to uni!

I believe you are the only person I have ever heard say that.  I have read both several times, and I like both, but I certainly prefer LOTR, and most people I know don't care for the Silmarillion.  You have to REALLY like old Norse Sagas and a long-dead style of writing to get into it.  I do, so I did.  Most don't though.

I find the that the Silmarillion is perhaps one of the best books I have read. It has everything that LOTR does and then more... I find that the language that it is written in makes it much the more better, the stlye fits the themes...

Just finished "God Bless You Mr. Rosewater" by Kurt Vonnegut and randomly started rereading "Breakfast of Champions" by the same author this morning. I am enjoying his cynical, tragic yet ultimately funny view of existence. Next is the CS Lewis Space Trilogy. In non--fiction I'm reading "They All Played Ragtime" by Rudi Blesh.

Been working through Paradise Lost by Milton.  First epic poem I've picked up, took a bit to get used but I'm enjoying it.  Interesting story so far, there are a lot of allusions that I'm unfamiliar with, but most of all I like the rich imagery.

Also been chopping through a Bach bio, by Wolff.  Very detailed, and inspiring.

I've been low on time for reading, it's taking pretty long to get through these.  The flow is choppy.

Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon.  normally his style is too cartoonish for me to bear (I get sick of Vineland after 100 pages, and Gravity's Rainbow is enough to drive one mad), but I keep coming back to his writing time and time again, and this is in my opinion his best by far (haven't read the new one).  I think the 18th century American-Romance style reins in his cartoonish-ness at least a little bit, and he masters it so completely that he can even translate modern slang into that idiom.  Highly recommended!

*raises an eyebrow* What, you don't think Maimonides is worth reading unless for a philosophy thesis?

Anyway, finished the Chaim Potok thingy, Book of Lights, and I'm just SO LOST, I need to do some studying and then re-read... Does anyone know where to find some synopsis of Zohar online? And some commentaries/essays/papers about the Zohar? There are so many references, I'm pretty sure I missed at least half of the message in the Potok book...

I forgot to mention, Marcus Aurelius: Meditations.
