Is it Mozart's skull we have?
on: January 04, 2006, 01:01:41 AM
I guess someone has a skull that might be Mozart's.  Now they are supposed to be close to verifying that for sure.

it was passed around for a while as mentioned here:
www.harpercollins.com.au/drstephenjuan/news_body_odysseys.htm

and then his death subjected to various theories:
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A1304957
one of which was that he died shortly after eating pork chops

of course, there's always the odd attempted murder of mrs. magdalena hofdemel when her husband found out she might be five months pregnant with mozart's son.  mr. franz hofdemel slashed her arms, neck, and face the day after the funeral and then killed himself.  oddly, she survived and gave birth to the boy who had shared mozart and franz's names.  it is thought that hofdemel may have poisoned mozart before the attempted murder of his wife.

and, then the masonics thought he either gave out too many masonic secrets or was making fun of them in the 'magic flute' and possibly assasinated him.

or, salieri poisoned him.  or mozart poisoned himself (if he had syphilis) with mercury.

'the mystery of mozart's skull' is a book i haven't read yet - but i think i saw an exerpt of it once.

In 1991 a French academic who examined the skull suggested Mozart may have died of complications from a head injury not rheumatic fever, as most historians believe.

It looked like someone had put a spade through it? :D

No seriously, go to wikipedia and look for yourself. But this is wikipedia here, we cant trust its sources. Probaly just one of the many myths of Mozart. I wonder if they could do some genetic work on 'his' skull to find out, because thats really interesting I think.

Yeah, it does say it, and it does speculate. You can always trust speculation, for what it is at least :)

A bit about it here

Dunno if the show has been on. Boils down to rude verse and, as expected with the atypical "was so and so composer of all this music suffering from asperger's / jewish / gay / called Fred and born in 1972" stuff, the guy writing the show has it. "If only Mozart were like me" :)

That's the article.  They are comparing DNA from the skull believed to be Mozart with DNA from known relatives of Mozart.  The results will show if that really is Mozart's skull.
