Please rate these pieces
on: January 06, 2006, 08:35:51 PM
Hey everyone

Could some one rate the Ravel Sonatine (particularly the 3rd movement) and Brahms Rhapsody in G minor using piano street's difficulty ratings?  I'm pretty sure the Brahms is more difficult.

Does anyone have Liszt's Paganinni Etude #3: La campanella (especially the Ab minor one)  on their comp.?  If so plz pm me.

Thanks so much.

Kevin

Hey coool, I'm playin both of those right now.

2nd movement- this piece is the easiest technically, there are barely any pedal markings, which adds a bit of difficulty

Brahms- The leaps and the huge span that the left hand must cover in the single notes is what causes this piece to be difficult.

1st movement- I found this about the same as the Brahms, but it is more difficult in certain sections.

3rd movement- There are a ton of contrasting sections, fast slow, and some very awkward finger positions.  This is much more difficult than the 1st, 2nd mvoements, and also the Brahms.

I don't know what you mean by pianostreet rating.... so I'm just gonna say what I think  ;D

2nd movement, Brahms, 1st movement, 3rd movement [increasing difficulty]

Thank you so much!

If you click sheet music at the top menu and search for a piece Piano Street has labelled the levels.  THat's the PIanostreet difficulty rating.

I am very surprised the Ravel is harder (which is what I am preparing for a competition in March).  Well, i havent sightread the entire Brahms.  Next thing you know, people will start saying the Ravel Sonatine is harder than the Schubert Eb impromptu and the Chopin Fantaisie-Impromptu!  lol

Some of the level ratings seem very odd to me.  I look at some and say, "There is NO WAY that that is easier than THAT."  But I guess different people find different things difficult.

I am quite sure the Sonatine is more difficult than the two other pieces you mentioned  ;)
I find it more difficult, but not by much.  I'm also not saying it's easy.  This is mostly because the piece itself is about twice as long as the rhapsody (if you want to play the entire sonatine) and having to play three contrasting movements just adds to the difficulty.

Which is harder, the Beethoven Sonata Op.2. No.2 or the Ravel?
By the way, I heard a recording of the Ravel on oboe and it was amazing!  I wish the piano could change dynamics while holding a single note!
Sorry about all the questions.
