Please Help Me Choose a Piece
on: January 07, 2006, 01:04:50 AM
Hi. I want to begin to learn a very difficult piece in eight or so months, and in the intervening time I would like to learn something that would help me technically/musically with the other piece. The difficulties in this piece are endurance, fast and prolonged repetition of chords, octaves, and flexibility of fingers. However, I have a very limited knowledge of which pieces of music could help me, which is where my problem is.

So therefore, I would greatly appreciate it if some of you might aid me and give me the names of some etudes which would improve as much as possible on as many as possible of the above technically difficulties. Since I am very partial to the music of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, I would very greatly prefer that the piece be an etude from one of two. However, if there is another piece which is so perfect for the task that it must be mentioned, I would be alright with taking a look/listen to it.

Here is a list of my current repertoire so that you can have an idea of my general skill level, although I would be fine with the piece being slightly above my range:

Scriabin- etude in D# minor Op. 8 No. 12 (currently learning)
Rachmaninoff- Prelude C# Minor
Liszt- Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen
Bach- Prelude/Fugue Bb Major

Also, I would just like to say thanks in advance, since this would be a very great help and I would appreciate any assistance with this.

Why donīt you try Prokofievīs Op. 2 Nš 1 etude?
Itīs an awesome piece. Well, all 4 etudes are.
If you like his tocatta, try his Nš 3 etude.

But which is better for the techniques i mentioned, the 2/1 or the 2/3? Im not necessarily picking it for how good it sounds, im more interested in developing the techniques.

Thanks for the replies so far, people.

Yes well that piece doesnt really help with any of the techniques i listed, other than flexibility i guess, which is a lower priority than the prolonged repetition of chords and the octaves and endurance.

i agree,to play all 4 together also quite nice idea
suggest you to finish op.8 no.12 from scriabin and start some easy chopin etudes to build up your ground technique
