randomly - listen to this too - sibelius op5no5
on: January 08, 2006, 09:57:02 PM
sibelius is of course a great orchestral composer, but his piano works have been neglected, not without reason of course - they are uneven and often of lesser substance when compared to his great works, and are said to be a bit unpianistic...sibelius himself was more of a violinist...

BUT, there are the odd few gems, and this is one.
this piece is quite special to me, its very haunting, beautiful, and rather hypnotic too, the texture, basic melody, and harmonies, though simply, are just so beautiful, especially in this performance.

dont know what you guys will think of it, but it really moves me, check it out -

This is a great piece, a couple of my students have done it, one sucessfully in competition (i.e. she won) I think all of the pieces in this set, Six Impromptus op.5 are woth doing, as are the Sonatinas op.67, Kylikki (lyrical pieces) op.67 and the Flower and Tree pieces, op. 85 75 respectively. I think Sibelius' piano music is great, at least these pieces, and the arrangement of Valse Triste also. I don't care for the Sonatas though, they're pretty clunky...This performance is beautiful, great playing. Havard Gimse, I will have to listen to him more...these young Norwegian pianists are excellent!

Thanks for uploading this. A hauntingly beautiful piece. I'm going to try to get the sheet music.

I remember the first time I heard this, it was on the radio.  This piano piece comes on and I remember thinking: that's so beautiful.

I managed to get the score for the entire Op.5 for $1 at a local music shop when they do their annual clearance of old or unsold items.  You can find a lot of great unknown music in those bins.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Yes, nice piece, and the piano writing is very idiomatic.

I thought it was pretty, but I didn't find it moving like you said steven.  felt like a lot of technique.
