Scarlatti sonatas
on: January 08, 2006, 10:08:53 PM
Hi all,

Can anyone recommend me a good (and preferable cheap ::)) recording of the Scarlatti sonatas? Did Argerich record any? I've heard her play just one but I loved it. If not, anything else that's good will do. It doesn't have to be the full set, since there's about a billion of them.

Thanks,

Jas

Edit: Oh, and what's your favourite one, just out of curiosity?
Edit 2: Ok, I've done a bit of raking around and it seems she only recorded k.141, which is a great shame. Oh well.

I'm particularly fond of the Christian Zacharias's double CD album. Devoid of technical fails, emotional rendition, beautiful piano sound; for my taste, truely exemplary.

About cheap recordings, the choice is the Naxos's collection. 7 CD's so far, 7 different pianists, each one at $6.95.  Very good purchase. I'm waiting for the eighth CD.

I really like M. Pletnev's double CD containing 31 Scarlatti sonatas
(you can easily find it in Amazon).

Thanks! I'll hunt one of them down. I'll probably get the Pletnev, since I've never heard of the other guy. :)

Argerich was afraid of Scarlatti. It's the trills. :)

Get them both !!!!! They are both truly beautiful double CDs. I think I marginally prefer the selection on Zacharias' (ah, K296!) but I have lterally worn out tracks on both I've listened so often.
