Music for 2 pianos
on: January 14, 2006, 07:44:25 PM
Dear All,

I wondered if anyone could reccommend some music for 2 pianos? I already know of the Rachmaninov suite, Debussy En Blanc et Noir and a few Stravinsky arrangements - but what is out there apart from those?

Also, out of interest I was thinking today when did music for 2 pianos start to be written? Because as far as I know 4 hands piano music seemed to be more popular pre 20th century - I know Mozart and Schubert wrote much piano music for 4 hands - but I don't think they wrote any for 2 pianos did they? I suppose they wrote alot of 4 hand piano music for domestic use as most households would only have one keyboard instrument.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

not mentioned on the above link:

Lutoslawski's Paganini Variations for Two Pianos - this piece is really cool

Milhaud - Scaramouche

Ravel - various works

Reger - two sets of variations, with fugues

Always play as though a master listened.

I'm playing the Mozart Sonata for 2 pianos. I believe it is K. 548, but don't quote me on that.  It is in D major.  Definitely a hard piece to play with someone.

Poulenc has written some 2 piano pieces. I played his Elegie for 2 pianos. Not very difficult, but beautiful
