Did anyone get good from pf?
on: January 19, 2006, 02:04:36 AM
Cruel, hard question.

I feel I have gotten more of the piano culture.  I don't know how much it has benefited my playing though.  But how much?

I think the most important thing PF has done for me was to help me believe that it's possible for a late beginner such as myself to become good at piano.

I've pretty much created my practice routine from the advice of Bernhard. What I haven't learned directly through this site, I've gotten as links or book recommendations. Lotsa info.

Paulsylvianenaud pointed me to a site that I found very useful for practicably tying together the baffling amount of info. Maybe because the authors english was so clear ;D.

...found it: https://www.pianoeu.com/indexje.html

I would say that PF has formed the foundation of my learning. I was just dickin' around before I found it.

But how much?

Lots, but not necessarily directly and in some postive and negative ways.

Obviously you have to practise to improve your playing, reading a forum doesn't do that, but there's a wealth of stuff here that I've found useful, in most of the categories.

With "a good teacher" and / or being in a position where access to the culture you mention was a bunch of folk locally to me, perhaps at college or the other people at a recital, friends and so on, I wouldn't miss the forum from a playing perspective.

But in the absence of both I'd have progressed even more slowly than I have if it weren't for the material on the forum.

I have opinions about what would make it better though.

It didn't increase my playing skill, but it definately did increase my knowledge about repertoire. If it wasn't for pianoforum, I wouldn't have been listening to Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Liszt, Scriabin, Alkan, Beethoven etc.

The knowledge I've gained here has helped me to become more focused, and therefore more efficient, in my practice.  As a result I think I have progressed faster in some areas than I did before I found the forum.

Interestingly, I have also applied some of the theories to my guitar playing.  I recently was asked to join a band and had to learn about 40 songs in a very short period of time.  Being able to have a conceptual method allowed me to do that with less stress.

Additionally, I don't have many people in my own circle who play music or talk about it.  By having a community to hang out with I often gain motivation from other's successes and struggles.

Overall, I believe my involvement in the forum has had a positive impact on my playing.

I can say I have gotten better because of the forum.  I can assure you that it has definately exposed me to much more music from composers I enjoy as well as other obscure composers that I have never heard of.  This has increased my awareness for different styles of music, and has helped me quite a bit.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

i agree with that- i've found that i don't learn an awful much about technique etc. unless it's actually shown to me in person. however in terms of small problems i've encountered it's been good. and also just making me so much more aware of what is out there- i don't feel half as ignorant as i did when i started coming here! and it's increased my overall interest and amount of effort i put into music, so that's bril for me!

Lots.  I get to interact with musicians who all share a passion for the piano.  Up till my university years, I really didn't have a chance to meet such people.  Being a part of pianostreet also lets me see the views of other pianists all around the world.

I have learned a great deal in the repertoire section too.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I haven't learned anything other than that I seem to think and play very differently to musicians, which was in the nature of a confirmation rather than a discovery. However, I have made the acquaintance of one or two interesting players and I like to think I have helped the odd person enjoy music more.

I gained alot of motivation and knowledge from the people I met at the old chopinfiles. Now, I am self-motivated as far as playing and collecting are concerned.
