Its a dog fight! And I am in the middlle!
on: January 19, 2006, 05:11:44 AM
So I am outside with my three dogs on dinnertime. Sheila (a small labrador mix)is just about to chow down on but then Rascal ( a medium labrador mix) comes over and strats pretending that its his food and not Sheila's. So Sheila is pretty p*** off about this and starts growling and barking but then Jasmine (a mediaum but heavy set husky) comes over and gets in the fray. In a split second its a full blown fight between the three dogs.
I hop in the middle to try to stop them but I get tangled up in it as well. This wasent a scuffle, this was a fight to the kill, the dogs were going all out on each other. If anybody has seen a dog seriouse dog fight youll know that its some pretty heavy stuff. So I am punching, kicking, and trying to split them up. But I cant control it and its just getting worse. This contiunes about another half a minuet then my mom comes out of the house screaming like a banshee and gets in the middle of it to. So we scuffle some more.. "AHHH! my finger! she took off my finger!!!" my mom screams,  ohh sh** I think to myself. So then I finally tackle Sheila and pick her up and throw her in the house while my mom tackles jasmine, and then i throw rasacl in the shed.  Me and my mom run in the house.. My moms finger was not quite bit off, but it was pretty screwed up.. So now shes getting stiches..

Some helpful advice:

NEVER JUMP IN THE MIDDLE OF A DOG FIGHT!!!

If those were rockweiler you'd have been... well... dead

But if you must: kicking all the dogs (including your own) in the head as hard a possible will stop the fight completely.

Does your mother play piano too? Hopefully not. Time for you to train the dogs. Untrained dogs are a pain in the ass and dangerous. What if a little kid had walked into that? They could have taken him/her apart. The lawsuit the parents would file would be the least of it.

Dogs like to take orders. It's in their nature. If you can't do it yourself, it's time for a professional obedience trainer. I spent three hours with one when I was a teenager, he showed me how to speak to the dog and communicate with it, so it would follow my orders. Here's a few quick tips...

Dogs do not understand our languages. They do understand 1 to 5 syllable commands, after repetition and praise for following the order. Most dogs will start to obey. It is in their nature.

Be firm, but don't shout or yell at the beast. It may take that as a challenge, and try and fight you. Assert your superiority firmly but without losing your temper. Remember that the dog has an intllegence equivelant to a 3 year old human child, at best. Let it know who is in charge. The dog will get the message pretty quickly, in my experience.

OTOH these dogs sound older, you may need a professional to help you. You can teach an old dog to behave, as well as some new tricks!

Perhaps not the best way to couch it to her though.

when my dogs have fought in the past, i make well sure not to try pulling them off each other, i'm afraid they'll reflexively turn on me, and yes, take a finger off.
there are many weird ways ways i've heard of to split up a dog fight.
1. stick your finger up the dogs ass, yes it doesnt make sense to me either.
2. pour ice cold water over them.
3. pour pepper on their faces.
many years ago my friends bull terrier got his jack russel by the neck, all the kicking in the world wasnt working, so i told him to run and get pepper. he came back with pepper corns ::), it's not very easy to get pepper corns in your eyes, nose and taste buds.

I hear 9mm help as well.

I have had to break up some dog fights before. Everytime I did I took the dog that seemed to be winning, put my arm under its belly and other hand around its neck. a quick yank and bam they are apart. If you chose right the other dog that was getting whipped won't continue.

you can also ask your vet what you can do.
