Newbie here, just saying hi
on: January 27, 2006, 02:19:21 AM
Hi everyone, this is my first post here.  Im just getting started on piano, however im a very experienced guitarist so i have a good musical background, particularly an extensive knowledge of theory.

Im 18 years old and just got a casio px-555 digital piano for christmas, so far ive been teaching myself.  At this point my primary concern is working on technique and sightreading, as my compositional skills and theory knowledge are well up to par as i spend upwards of 6 hours a day playing guitar and focus largely on songwriting(im not talking lame teenage guitar stuff either, im working in a classical/experimental frame of mind, think steve vai, joe satriani, yngwie malmsteen etc)

anyways i just wanted to say hi and ask if anyone has some broad advice on where to go.  the first pieces i've been working on are fur elise, moonlight sonata, and clementi's Sonatina Op.36-1

Sorry I'm not of much help, but I just want to say Hi and Welcome ^_^

People are pretty friendly here, with plenty of humour and knowledge that people want to share, and this has to be my favourite forum actually, so enjoy your stay!

I tried guitar, but since I didn't really have anything pushing me (like an Idol or something) I lost interest pretty quick O_o But it seemed like a fine instrument :) Nice to hear you do alot of composing too! My 2Gb of RAM arrived yesterday, so now I can load all the GPO instruments I like, and am currently working on my concerto :P So much fun in composing, and power at your disposal 8)

Actually, advice on where to go? My first Keyboard was a Yamaha, and the song book contained Fur Elise and several Burgmuller Op.100 Etudes, which were great to start with, maybe you could get hold of some of them, see what they are like? If you like I can send you the first 18 of the 25 in the Opus? Just say if your interested! (Sorry, don't have the No.19 and onwards)

The tunes are generally quite jolly, and the Arabesque is no doubt familiar as well, which is nice to hear when you start off!

Oh, and one more thing, since you have a Digital Keyboard, try and get hold of a Laptop or fancy Mp3 Player, to record yourself as you progress! I listen to my old recordings and I can actually hear the progress in technique since then, which is quite nice ^_^ Or you can go all out and get a Digital Camera, and record a video of you playing!

 Just some thoughts :)

hey! Thats so great that your teaching yourself piano! I never could, and Ive been taking lessons for about 5 years. Guitar is musically really hard (Ive Tried) so I know that youll pick up on it really quickly. If you want to ask real teachers questions, you might find help at the teachers section....just a thought :)

well it looks like this is quite a good place to come for support in my new piano adventure.  when i was learning guitar i found a forum that was just excellent in both its atmosphere and what it had to offer learning wise, so i figured id look for the same with my new instrument...and looks like i found it!
