Prokofiev Etude Recordings
on: February 02, 2006, 12:09:37 AM
Ive become interested in Prokofievs music after listening to 3 of his etudes, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend any really good recordings of his piano music, preferably his etudes. Thanks.

Whoagh! you've entered into awesome territory!
There's shite loads of Prokofiev's piano stuff to explore! Boris berman has recorded the complete piano music so tehre's probably your easiest bet.
Richter is probably the definitive Prokovian pianist as he premiered and had some of the works dedicated to him. Gavrlilov is another strong contender for Prokofiev's music.
As for music, all the concerto's (start of with 3 first - is typical Prokofiev). The 9 sonatas (6-8 are the best). Romeo and Juliet has a solo piano arrangement which is often played. I think Kissin may have recorded the etudes - I know one of them is on the Great Pianists label. There's heaps of single pieces or small groups - op.4 no.4 is early, devilish Prokofiev. 'sarcasasms' I think is op.16.
Enjoy

Thanks for the reply mikey, i couldnt find much other than Richter playing sonatas 2, 6, and 7 from barnes and nobles (thats where I have my gift card), so I think ill go with that. Also, I meant to ask this but I forgot, but I was also wondering which performers/recordings to get of Alkan because he seems to be in the same vein as Prokofiev. Thanks.

Frederic Chiu's 10-CD set of Prokofiev's complete piano music is comprehensive and quite good.
Maurizio Pollini's rendition of the piano sonata no. 7 is unsurpassed.

There's a famous recording of Richter playing the 5th concerto and the 8th sonata. (and I think there's something else on the CD as well).
I'm not an Alkan expert but generally Marc-Andre Hamelin is the way to go, and the op.39 set of 12.

Thanks for all the replies, I've ordered a Richter recording of 3 Prokofiev sonatas. I found an Alkan CD with the 12 etudes Op 39 as well, but the performer is Jack Gibbons, and Ive never heard of him so I'm unsure as of whether to buy it. Any of you know of this Jack Gibbons fellow or the calibur of his Alkan recordings? Thanks.

I think you should get Chiu recordings. Richter's recording of the 6th sonata is.. well, bad.
