Pianolist just read this thread in amazement. He is deeply humbled at being accepted by 9999 friendly pianists and piano technicians. He reckons he may be the only professional pianolist on the site. He posted a recording of Medtner on piano roll to the Auditions Room in the early hours of this morning in London.

Congratulations, webmaster, on being so successful.

Oh, oh, yippeee! Pianolist is jumping up and down with excitement. He is truly grateful for everyone's welcome, and particularly to Nils (or is it Johan?) for his generosity.

The Piano Street sheet music library looks like a wonderful resource, even to those who play their pianos by means of piano rolls. Most of you will not know about piano rolls, of which Pianolist has about 1,000 more than his membership number, but in the coming months, you will, trust me, you will.

Now for the serious bit: I am amazed and delighted to have become Piano Street's 10,000th member, which certainly underlines the developing importance of the worldwide forum and its resources. It is especially interesting to be in contact with pianists, piano teachers and technicians in far-off countries, all at the touch of a button, and I'm sure Piano Street can only help to improve the general standing of the piano and its music.

There, I said something quotable. I like to earn my keep, you know.

Thank you all once again.

PS: I tried to attach a little present in return, but the "Anything but Piano" list doesn't like it, so I'll send a  separate posting to the Audition Room section: https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,15738.0.html
It's a roll I made of of the Finale from Pineapple Poll, a ballet score created by Sir Charles Mackerras from the music of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. It's on one of my CDs - oops, I shouldn't advertise. Naughty boy!

Well, good morning, folks!

OK Gruffalo - it was my shabby attempt at humour. I'm 57 years old, yes 5-7, which probably means I am utterly ancient in the eyes of most of you. I was actually rather touched, both by your welcome and by the way you didn't mock pianogrl. I learned long ago that a few people over a certain age can look really serious and almost threatening, when what they are really doing is enjoying a little humour. I have a best friend, whom I have known for 25 years, and I glower at him and call him a git and far worse than that on most days. He just laughs, and then I do too. Anyway, pleased to make your acquaintance, old chap.

Thank you also, Siberian Husky (and I just love your photos) for all that advice. To a 57-year old, one of the diseases of contemporary piano playing is that there isn't enough fun in it. There's Lang Lang, of course, but he's a bit too self-orientated for my taste. But there's too much concentration on the right notes, and on authenticity - it's a bit like religious conformity. So I certainly intend to have fun, oh yes sireee.

Now, my bag is the pianola. It is very widely misunderstood, and as I have been saying, most of you probably don't even know what it is. This publicity from being the 10,000th member is an unbelievably good opportunity, a real kick-start. If anyone thinks this is a conspiracy (and I actually doubt anyone really does), then I would say to you that your webmaster is most unlikely to have come to a secret agreement to let a pianola player into such a position. I can tell you that it's great fun to be wild at the age of 57, and I don't mean being desperately wild in order to pretend that you are younger than you are. True wildness has no age, and we certainly need more wildness in the world of piano playing.

But you can be wild and polite at the same time. Frontal attacks are not very effective, in any case. To insult any composer or musical style does far more damage to your own cause than it does to the area that you are insulting. If you really want to change people's views, then gentle humour has a lot going for it.

Right, enough for now. I've started a Sorabji and the Pianola thread, and I have gallons of composers whom I can link to the Pianola in due course. You seem like a friendly community on the whole, and I think we shall get on just fine.

Don't drag. Just click the smiley and you will get something like ": )". This will show up like a smiley image in the post.
