Conservatory audition for composer
on: February 03, 2006, 03:53:25 AM
Hello,

I want to pursue my passion and dream of becoming a composer so I decided to apply to a music conservatory.  The faculty wants me to audition for them and I am very nervous because unfortunately I'm not that great a piano player.  I have only studied piano for about a year and haven't yet mastered Bach's 2 part invention.

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any composers out there or other people who have some advice for me since I'm not that great a piano player.  I love the piano and enjoy playing it, I just wasn't raised in an environment where music mattered so I had to pursue it on my own.  Excuses aside, I have accomplished alot as a composer such as being hired by other professional composers to orchestrate their music and having some of my pieces performed by professional orchestras.  I just want to take it to the next level and be taught in a conservatory how to excel as a composer.  I just wish they didn't consider piano as a prerequesite.

Any advice for people who aren't so great at piano but getting better, practicing, and trying their best?  Should I focus on easy pieces or will they immediately write me off?  Should I screw up difficult pieces but at least I tried something difficult?

Thanks.
K
