long live nerds
on: February 10, 2006, 02:46:43 AM
saw this, thought it was amusing-

Long live Nerds!!! If there were more nerds there would be:

less wars (can't shoot and read!)
less violence (not many violent nerds are there?)
more peace and quiet (apart from the pages of books rustling)
less traffic (tried reading while driving?)

Never apologise for being a nerd! ;D

(lolol)

Yeah, we're all music geeks here.

I sometimes become a book nerd, but never a computer nerd. Computers irritate me, even though I rely on 'em... >:( >:(

Nerds are cool lol, easy going, rarely hold a grudge.  The only nerd-type I despise are computer nerds, well, at least the ones in my school.  You try to say anything that has to do with some form of technology, and they just explode on you.  They say that you suck bcuz the computer you have sucks compared to their uber haxxor computer.  If you dont talk about the latest technology, but rather something that came out a week ago, they flip out, and start yelling and talking really fast about random technology.  You try to talk about something like the hockey game, and they reply with:  I didn't watch it, I was playing world of warcraft, my sweet magician casted 40 fireballs (and they do the action of a fireball blasting) and killed like 40 megademons.  OMG my magician is pwnage, omg omg.  Then I reply with: uhh ok, so ya I submitted my applications to random grocery stores for a summer job.  Then they reply:  why the f**k would you need a summer job, ppl who get jobs are super poor, and have to work to get money, my dad pays for everything, he pays for my computer geek monthly magazine subscription, and i dont have to work, cuz my parents pay for everything, i got some application forms, and filled them out, but im too lazy to send them in, cuz i have to level up my guy in world of warcraft, because if i dont level him up, im gonna get kicked out of my cult, and i dont wanna do that, cuz ill be an outcast in the computer geek world, so ya you suck cuz you have to work in the summer while i can sit alone in my basement and play this computer game, sucker sucker, n00bs

Some computer geeks, w/e their fine, but theres like a group of the annoying ones in each of my classes, and it pisses the h*ll outa me.  They say all these sly computer related remarks and try to make you look like an idiot, and their all these greasy pale kids who never ever do anything useful, will never get anywhere, and will end up living in their parents basement until they die.

That felt good to get out...sry if i've offended anyone, but as i said, some computer geeks are fine, but there's always that select few who absolutely everyone find annoying.

Corollary:

Pianists and piano techcs argue endlessly about the merits of a particular brand of piano.  Stein___ is better than fazi-yama-kawi-dorfer because of ____.  We talk about string scales, piano rims, touch weight, key surfaces, ivory vs plastic vs imitation ivory, satin vs polished.  We fuzz endlessly about why the break between bi-chord and tri-chords never sounds right.  How do we want our pianos to sound: bright, mellow, lush, rich, lean, focused, big, washy, dreamy, sparkly, and of course the ubiquitos bell like tone (how do you describe that to a non musician anyways).  Why does one brand sound good with a particular composer like Shoo-zart, when another is better with Cho-rach-alka-liszt, when Scria-deb-sati-avel sounds so resonant with an August Bluth-auter.  Then we knock people for playing "digitals" because music can't be fully represented by them.  Then we of course go and talk about weighted keyboards, sampled piano sounds, having a Mason and Stein___ concert grand sound in our living room, and of course looking at models that offer fractional pedalling.  Of course much still has to be done to improve the digitals representation of una corda pedalling, not to mention the effect of sympathetic vibration of adjacent strings and duplex scaling has on various tone combinations.  When someone has a piano in a state of disrepair, we tell them to go find a tech to fix it up to some very exacting specifications, down to the nearest 10000th of a milimeter (sorry 100th of a milimeter is not good enough).  Then then is the whole world of piano buying.  We consider a sane piano buyer is one who absorbs all the above (plus more), and takes it all into account when flying around the world in search of their ideal piano so they might introduce this instrument to their 4 yr old daugher (by the way they're also asking if it is too late to start music lessons themselves).

How would all this (normal talk for us) sound to a non music geek?

PS:  (no disrespect to Axtremus, I think this is a really cool concept) - for the "piano enthusiast" (well that's what they call computer geeks don't they) in you
