Yamaha U5 vs C5
on: October 17, 2003, 06:56:45 AM
Hi. I want to buy a piano, but I don't know if I should get the Yamaha U5 (52" upright) or just go for the Yamaha C5 (6'7 grand). I currently have an upright and I have a good sized living room, but I'm still a bit worried about the grand taking up too much space. Does anyone have an idea for the prices of these models? I would probably get a used one.
Also, does anyone know how the C3 and the C6 compare to the C5? Which would be the best value for its price?

Thanks in advance.

The C3s and C5s aren't much different in price, so if you can fit it, the C5 would probably be a better value.  They list new for around $30k, but you should be able to pick a new one up in the mid 20's.  A used one will probably cost between $15k-$20k assuming it's not too old and in good condition.

I was worried about fitting a large grand into a room, and the dealer gave me a paper template cut to the size and shape of the piano's footprint.  It came in quite handy for seeing how the piano would affect the traffic flow in the room.  You could always make one if you can't find a dealer willing to give you one.

Thanks a lot for replying. I decided just to go ahead and get the C5. I looked around and found one for $25k, but we brought it down to 21k. Then checked another store and went ahead buying a new one for 19k out the door. Oh, and I also checked out the paper template thing, and the piano ended up fitting fine.

Congratulations on the C-5. It's a good instrument, and USD19k for a new C-5 is plain fantastic! I envy your bargaining skill!  ;D
