Starting piano lessons!
on: February 15, 2006, 09:27:29 PM
Hi @ll!
I'm gona study music professionally next year so I need to start taking some piano lessons (my major would be composing for movie-scores) but how fast can I learn it in short time? I'm thinking of taking 2 lessons a week for 3 month with a lot of practicing (2-3h a day). Would that be a good start and how well could I actually practice it on a keyboard after the lessons since I can hardly afford a digital-piano?
I had violin for 2 years and studied dancing professional for 5 years so my musicality should certainly not be a problem.
How much is actually the average price for a 1h lesson? I live in LA.
Is it also ok to quit taking lessons after 3 month (to save money) and still making big process with self-practicing?

Thanks

It depends on yourself. What's do you expect to get from 3 months of lessons. I think you can answer the question by comparing from your violin and dancing lesson. Are those enough fot 3 months lesson. I understand that musicality is not a problem. But, playing piano do take time in learning how to moving at the piano. This is just like learing how to drive a car. The theory how to drive can be taught in one hour lesson, but how long dose it take you to drive without supervisor and be about to drive on a hightway?

However, your goal of playing is different from other because you want to be a composer not a pianist. Three months of lesson might be enough to let you familiar with the piano and be able to compose better. Try it and you will see how long you need the lessons.

About the rate, you should check at your local music school. The rate is different from place to place.

I think that you must think a little more realistically. Majoring in something that may require moe than just beginnert piano lessons can be a burden, especially if you are expecting to make a living off of such a business. Practicing 2 to 3 hours a day would also be questionable, because of the dedication you need to give to your classes, which in this case are more important that technical proficiency. Also a beginner may not be able to sustain himself for 2 to 3 hours, plus there is only so much progress a beginner can make during the first few months. I also don't think the idea of 3 months of lessons will be of much help, that is if you quit after those few months.

By no means am I trying to make you give up something that you really like. I don't know all of the fine details, and I hope that it can work out for you. Good luck.
