If  you are like me in Johannesburg which is a generally hot dry climate or for the US, like Arizona then, on thier own they are unnecessary. But, are needed with a full Dampp chaser system.

Well I live in south Florida.  Very Humid most of the year.  Except late december, jan, feb, and maybe march. So would I benefit from one? Someone told me that those bars "cook" your piano.  That sounds kind of stupid to me but I dont know anything about them.  But I want my piano as stable as possible.

Who is the "someone" that told you?  A qualified technician?

Go to www.dampp-chaser.com and read.

I don't think they're going to cook your piano unless the hydrostat isn't working properly and it gets stuck on permanently.  I had them installed on my piano and it seems to hold its pitch better with the bars.  Note that on a grand, they really only help underneath the soundboard.  It would be better if you could control the climate in the entire room.

Whether you need one or not depends on the stability of the temperature and humidity in your house.  Put a hygrometer in the room with the piano and monitor the humidity range to see if it would be worth the expense.

One thing I don't care for about the Dampp-Chaser is the electric cord which has to be run to an outlet.  If your piano isn't up against a wall, it's a trip hazard.  I recommend installing a floor outlet.

thanks for the help.  the person who told me that was a "suspect" piano dealer.  I wont mention any more about that.  Ill get a hygrometer thanks.
