Pathetique Sonata
on: February 19, 2006, 01:02:42 AM
Hey

How should I practice the Part around page 2 where the C tremelo's starts in the left hand, My trouble is getting the right hand right on the C in the left, uneven. My teacher suggested dotted rythms but im starting to get sick of it. thats her answer to everything. but this is something dotted rhythm wont help, its when i try speeding it up to around 132 to 142 it gets out of time with each other, ive master it at a slower tempo, but my aim is to play it at 142, any tips ?

 ;D Hey there!
When I played the first mov't, I had a lot of trouble with that too!! Don't worry. It'll come along. If I didn't interpret this wrongly, personally, my advice is:

Play both hands at a speed you're MOST confortable with first. (I noe, it sucks but this was how I practised..) Really get use to the rhythm!! Memorize it...remember wat it sounds like...whatever.. Then if you feel more comfortable...gradually go a bit faster...If it still doesn't work, I'm sorry to say but...practise some more each day and remember it takes time!!

Also, if you're hafing some trouble moving your LH so that it matches your RH notes, wat i did was I practised moving my LH anywhere...maybe during class...or when you're in the car...lol yeah...on your lap...on the kitchen table...you know what i mean? Make it so then it's part of your life. lol...don't just practise on the piano.

I'm not sure if this will help ya..cuz it's different for everybody rite? Maybe there are other more "experienced" ppl out there who could help you better :)

Dun worries! You'll get it :)

I know how you feel, I once had a teacher who also thought dotted rhythms were the solve all solution.

The trick is to think ahead to the big main beats.  When you do this you stop thinking of all those individual notes and think instead of fitting them in to the correct time space.  Individual LH notes is ok for slow practice but when you need to speed up you have to go for the easier feel of biger beats.  Individual notes are to combersome to think of in fast passages.  You have to start thinking in groups of notes when you play faster.

Give a big LH accent every beat 1 of the bar.  After you do one, think ahead to the beginning of the next bar, then again LH accent on beat 1, etc.  This accent wil also bring out some clarity in the LH, as you noted it is clearer 1 octave up.

See where that gets you.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

What can help you in this part is that to play only half the LH tremolos, that is every to play every tremolo as one note only not two notes separated by an octave.

For example, the tremolos should sound like this C1 C2 C1 C2 C1 C2.......
What i mean is to play it like this..........................C1       C2      C1     C2.......etc.

This way it will make you feel when to play the RH chords. I did it like this and it helped me a lot feel the rythm.
