Help with Trio of Schubert's Impromptu op 90 #4
on: February 19, 2006, 11:05:01 PM
Does anybody have suggestion(s) on how to tackle the chords in the Trio? Holding the notes and playing the chords puts a lot of stress on my right arm which actually gets sore.  I am sure I am doing something wrong. Is there a specific technique to help with these chords?

Thanks,

Rosana

You only (well not really only) need rotate your hand like opening a door knob to play the multiple chords.

Once the pinky presses the top note, the weight of the hand can hold it down.

You can also try varying you method of attack- pushing into and pulling out while rotating helps playing this part feel smoother.

Using the entire arm - even the whole torse if it is comfortable - will help ease the stress on the hand.

Would be so much easier to explain if we were sitting next to each other ;)

I tried your suggestion of rotation (at least what I could figure out without an actual side by side demonstration  ;) ) and it really helped. There is much less stress in my forearm. Thank you so much for your help rimv2 :-*!

By the way, I did try to figure out your signature, but... what is it? It looks like two owls with ironically in between and then two other birds, one upside down. What does it mean? :-\
