"Better"
on: February 21, 2006, 04:30:17 PM
Are you afraid of the word better? Is it taboo? If so, why?
I'm getting sick of how many people are like ::makes a radio announcer like, over-gentle voice:: "It's not that this thing is
better
than something else, it is just that it is
different
."
I don't get it. What is the big deal? Some things are better than others. So? Afraid someone's feelings will get hurt? AWWW!
*note* Allow me to add that I consider it an obvious point that fixating on comparisons between oneself and others is a destructive and dangerous thing.

Yeah kind of. Its just why can't people be more blunt and honest. "I THINK SUCH AND SUCH IS BETTER THAN SUCH AND SUCH" instead of going all new age on my posterior.

california cheese is not the best. neither are their cows more contented. now that i've lived in pennsylvania - i believe the cows are most contented here. the cheese is very rich tasting. if you've never had a good cheesesteak hogie, or onion soup with mozarella cheese (one or two squares) come to pa. they overload the cheese and it's really good. also, they give you REAL blue cheese chunks in the dressing. pennsylvania has the BEST cheese (excluding france of course - which might be a contender for varieties).

hahah, naw, I understand what you're getting at. It's the whole 'politically correct' nature of our times. Somehow there's a whole generation that's afraid of the possibility of offending anyone. I wonder how this came about anyways?
If you ask me, someone else's response is beyond your control. If someone takes offense where none was intended, that's their issue. If someone takes offense over a miscommunication, well, ya try and clear the miscommunication. If the person continues to be offended then there's nothing you can do, communication breakdown, that's where a discussion degenerates into an arguement. It can be pretty irritating.
But that's what the internet can be good for; so many people with so many differing opinions, it's a good way to learn to debate. Which is why I don't like the whole "it's just
different
" attitude, because that's just a cop-out and a conversation killer. Doesn't mean much.
Nothing to be afraid of in differing opinions. Someone might just come by who's thought through it more, or has a very good understanding of the issue. Ya might just learn something.
I find myself to be pretty damn stubborn in my opinions, I'll automatically defend my ideas. It's a good way to put 'em to the test. If my little theories can hold up, they might be alright, if someone is able to shoot 'em down even better!
