Halloween theme
on: October 25, 2003, 01:56:37 PM
Hello everyone,
can anyone suggest a classical piece which is suitable, say, for a Halloween e-card? I'm looking for something 'mystical', kind of like the soundtrack of Harry Potter movies.

What do u think of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit?

Easy, Ed.
Or else I'll have to degrade you to Harry Potter, considering the striking similarities in your temperaments.

My purpose is not to degrade great classical pieces, but to look for those that have similar mood. Surely having the same mood doesn't necessarily mean having the same quality? Look, I'm sorry if the way I described it has caused misunderstanding, but trust me, I respect classical music as much as you.

Just wanted to add that if you'd really listen to Gaspard de la Nuit, you'd never match it with Halloween. Just think about the essence of one and then the other. A good choice for you might be the main theme from "Home Alone" (the opening bars are brilliant).

Whats wrong with putting Gaspard on a Hallowen card. After all, scarbo fits right in, as well as the second movement... IS Ravels music suddenly sacred or holy???
For a good laugh, check out my posts in the audition room, and tell me exactly how terrible they are :)

Gaspard de la Nuit is an extremely wonderful work on it's own. It shouldn't be used to fancify a Halloween e-card - it's not Wagner for God's sake,

Try something along the lines of "Mouse in the Coalbin".  That piece has not grown to great fame yet and no one will condemn you for exploiting it ;).  Though, it's a great beginner's piece.
You can't spell "Bach" without "ach"

Ed: Do you have some vindetta with Wagner?

There just so happens to be a piece called Halloween (from the movie, Halloween, believe it or not).  It's repetitive, but it fits.
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.

Firstly, the word is vendetta. Secondly, a vendetta would require Wagner to have a problem with me. Thirdly, I chose Wagner due to his notion of Gesamtkunstwerk - where the music would support the literature to make an overall more powerful impact - not because I dislike his music. Fourthly, we are forced to listen to Wagner at school (in music lessons rather than as some Hitleresque oath!), and I can't stand the stuff,

I agree completely. Even so...

Dont get all fancy. Stravinski and Prokovieff were very happy with getting their music into disney cartoons. Even is stravinski denied it later. Satie, Pouland anc Ravel came from a Music Hall Vaudeville background and loved popular music... Brahms was delighted to see that his lullabie was SO popular that nobody knew that he wrote it. So please, dont start getting all offended about Ravel apearing on a e-card. Now, ersonally I dont think i has that mystical quality. Id definately go for the corn and use Chopins funeral march...
