some great rare stuff i listened to lately
on: February 24, 2006, 07:56:50 PM
lately i got recordings of some very unknown pieces (all romantic piano concertos) and among them i found really beautiful music
Balakirev Piano Concerto No.2 in Eb Major
Paderewski - Piano Concerto in A minor
Scharwenka - Piano Concerto

i liked the paderewski overall the best
the scharwenka has some very nice melodies and the 2nd movement of the balakirev concerto can bring anyone to tears i think...
anyone heard of these concertos?

I think this can also be applied to the 2nd movement of the Paderewski concerto.   Quite powerful indeed !!  The other concerti are less familiar to me - I'll have to give them another listen.

The Balakirev Concerto is indeed beautiful.

It is refreshing that so many of the "forgotten" romantic conerto's have been recorded on the Hyperion label of late.

I haven't ever heard of those composers before. Could you point me towards some sheet music of some of there solo works that are nice? I'd love to show some of my friends some unknown composers to them.

are these from the 39 volume hyperion romantic piano concerto series? that series contains some of the best concertos, including the 4 scharwenka concertos, which are some of my all-time favorites. i am a rare piano concerto collector and point anyone in the right direction when it comes to rarer works like these.

maybe check out a few other volumes from that series if you like these concertos. the saint-saens and the alkan/henselt CDs are some of the best off that series if youre interested.
