I'm a first time teacher, how much do you think I should charge for piano lessons?

it depends on your education and the going rates from country to country and state to state (here in usa).  maybe check to see what others are charging to get a competitive rate.  sorry about what i said on the 1/2 hour lesson (for hobbyists).  actually, most of my students start out at 1/2 hour lessons and then progress to an hour somewhere between 6 mos. to a year when they have more repertoire and other stuff to learn.  you'll get a 'feel' for your students, too, and how serious they are.  most teachers spend the most time with the most serious students.  after all, you don't want to waste the parents money.  good luck!

between $30-50. moderate price range for hour lessons.  $55-70. graduate level (i would think)  75-100. for very advanced players.  someone correct me if this is not a good 'approximation.'  about 25 years ago (before i got my bachelor's degree) i was charging $8.00 per 1/2 hour lesson - so i would think $10.-12. would be the minimum and $15.00 if you are currently taking lessons yourself.  why not charge what you are worth - if you can teach well.

it is really impossible to mess up as long as you are patient and keep working your teaching skills by imitating your own teacher.  i've learned to talk less and ask more questions.  that gets the students thinking.  i used to just talk and talk - it's not effective - esp. with younger students.  they can only take in so much information in one lesson and so 1/2 is plenty for a while.  you can sort of tell when they are ready for more. (they might start asking for more).

break up the information.  tell them a few sentences.  then ask questions about what you said to see what they perceive and/or understand about the subjects you are talking about.  sometimes repeating an idea is helpful (several times). they see that it is important to you and they are more inclined to practice it.  lots of praise helps.

i am also planning to teach piano lesson this summer. I'm still in college majoring in piano pedagogy. I'm thinking to charge my students $ 7 or 8 for 1/2 an hour. is it good? any suggestions?
