Does anyone ever obsess over music?
on: February 27, 2006, 06:22:39 PM
I think I have a problem where I obsesse over extremely difficult songs, sometimes for 6-7 hours a day. If it is a hard piece I love I will spend around 6-7 hours a day on it and master it in around a week. On the other hand if it a piece my teacher gives me I do not like, I just cannot seem to force myself to play it.

Is this common for all of you all as well? I have been playing piano for 13 years, and am only 18. Will this leave with maturity?

Well, it has not left me with maturity.  I am age 64.

Fortunately, at my age my teacher does not insist I learn pieces that I clearly do not like.

I don't play scales or exercises either.

Like you, when I really fall in love with a piece, I practice hours a day and can't leave the piece alone until I have learned it.

That's exactly the way I am. And it's funny you should mention that, because that happened to me this past week. My instructor wanted me to do Clair de Lune by Debussy. While it's a wonderful piece, I don't much care to play Debussy. On the other hand, Chopin's Raindrop Prelude (Op. 28 No. 15) is a song I absolutely love. I was told to do the first page of Clair de Lune... instead, I learned and memorized Raindrop. How you progress and at what spend depends on how much you love what you play.
