Nordiska model "O" 7'
on: March 06, 2006, 12:54:27 PM
Just wondering if anyone has played the 7' Nordiska grand.  Looking at the specs, it is a different piano from any of their smaller grands.  Different action and hammers.  Found a price brand new of $12,000 US which i personally haven't seen a new piano of that size for that cheap.  I want to play one though and can't find one in the local area.  so anyone have any feedback about this instrument for me?

I'm also eager to try this one.  Nordiska is one of the best-rated Chinese manufacturers.  Any 7' piano should sound tremendous -- it's easier to design big ones than small ones.  I'm familiar with their 5' and 6' range of pianos.

Yes, this should be a spectacular piano at that price.  The equivalent Steinway is $70,000!

You can find a dealer by contacting the importer, Geneva Int'l:

I have played and worked on as number of them.  It is certainly the best Chinese piano ever made, but that being said, it is still a Chinese piano.

The inharmonicity is lower than you would expect from a Chinese piano, but it is still quite bad. Nordiska also has more than it's fair share of "false beats".

Less troubling, but still in need of immediate attention out of the factory is the regulation, it is terrible, (an especially poor is the job done with key easing).

I would not spend the money.

It is cheap for a reason ;)

Thank you for the information.  Are you a technician?

Simply put, go play the piano.

I know some of the guys at Geneva, I know some of the folks that consult with the factory, I know some of the techs who prep their instruments for trade shows.

Granted, that makes me biased....including the fact that I own a Nordiska.

Having said all that, the 7 footer is very good at the price quoted. Yes, I'm well aware of the fact it is not a $30,000 piano. And no, it doesn't play like one.

But compare it against what you can buy from $20K on down, and see how it stacks up.

Especially if you can find one where the store tech is capable (and the owner pays him to do so) of doing a decent prep job on the piano...action tweaking, string leveling, a bit of voicing...I think that the only fault one can find with the piano in general terms would be a small lack of power on some pieces...and if they'd change the hammer shanks and hammers I think even that problem would be remedied. False beats? Killer octave? Even some "good" pianos have beat or scale problems.

Again, one can get lost in a technical maze if one so wishes...let your own ears be the judge.

Who knows, y'all may positively hate the piano....

What size Nordiska do you own?  The only opportunity for me to play the 7 footer would be to travel to Ohio, which would be about 4 hours away.  Unfortunately most piano stores in my area don't ever stock larger sized pianos.

I played a baby grand Nordiska before, the sound is nice, however the key action is very soft, and the pedals are very light also.

The seven footer is a different beast.

The action is renner, the rim is maple, hammers are abel, the soundboard is upgraded.

Do not compare it to the catalpa rimmed pianos with domestic actions.
