Opinions on a concerto for a competition
on: March 08, 2006, 03:17:26 AM
Hey

I am going for auditions in april for a concerto movement comp and i need to learn a concerto movement thats 15 mins or less. I am looking for opinions on a piece that I will not get picked on as much. like not a hard one like prokofiev where they will pick on my alot, or rach 3. it can be any concerto movement (under 15 minutes).

any opinions,

The Bach Harpsichord Concertos are very underplayed, maybe if we could get more people to play them on the piano, they very well might become more prominent. And, what is better than an underplayed work of genius by Bach at an audition?
Medtner, man.

The Barber and Ravel Concerti are better.

Prokofiev #1 isn't bad as long as you have good octaves and scales. The #4 also seems alright.

Prokofiev 1 is probably the easiest of the 5.
Why not one of the Mendelssohn single movement works - there's 3

Rondo Brillante Eb (is fun to play!)
Cappriccio bmin
can't remember the last one

There's the short Liszt works
Totentanz ;D
Hungarian Fantasy might be a better option

Chopin
Polish airs
Rondo for piano/orch.
('la ci darem' vars might be too long)

Schumann
There are a couple of works besides the concerto which I don't rememberthe names of.

Mozart
There are 2 rondo's which are short - Amaj and Dmaj

The Rimsky Korsakov concerto is short although I don't like it.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.
Richard Strauss

Strauss Burleske for Piano and Orchestra is great but rarely played; but I think it lasts around 17 minutes.
