Medtner Sonata's... By Medtner!
on: March 09, 2006, 03:46:24 PM
 Hey everyone,

Listening to the NightWind sonata right now, I decided to research into the fascinating composer. To be able to compose such a marvelous must take some great skill and inspiration! I discovered he has composed 14 Sonatas! Apparently with a Medter Society formed by some guy in Royalty from some country close to India... he had the opportunity to record all the Sonata's (and probably more pieces!) himself.

Curious, has anyone heard these recordings? I noticed the great Hamelin has made a recording of the lot, also another pianist named Tozer, of which I have the Concerti of his. It sounds pretty good, but not fantastic by my taste. Naturally, having heard Hamelin's Alkan recordings, I presume it's fast and firey! But tbh, I don't think that is gonna suit Medtner's music in entirely that way, so I'm afraid to try his out >_<

I really hope Medtner has made some great recordings, I mean, before he started Composing big time he used to be a Concert Pianist of amazing skill, "Second to Rachmaninoff" as Wikipedia states... Darn! That must be impressive!

So, any comments on Medter's recordings of his own music is welcome! When I get out of college and back home I will try listening to it on Amazon!

 Kind Regards,
    Ruro

Here is the Amazon link, Volumes 1 & 3 of his complete recordings are available, don't know where Volume 2 is. On page 2 it says the 2nd and 3rd Concertos are out of print, as is "The Elizabeth Schwarzkopff Songbook", on which he accompanies her in many of his songs.

I own volume 3 of the complete solo recs, (on casette) he plays several of the Fairy Tales and Beethoven's "Apassionata" Sonata op.57. He was an extraordinary pianist.

The Maharajah of Mysore (a former "princely state" of British India, now a province of India) loved Medtner's music, and played Ludwig II to Medtner's Wagner, sponsoring the Medtner recordings project you have read about. The recordings were made after WWII, Medtner could not complete the project owing to a weak heart. They include the two Concerti (not the 1st), the songs with Schwarzkopff and shorter pieces, and I believe some of his chamber music as well as many Fairy Tales/Skazken and shorter piano pieces. To the best of my knowledge he did not record any of the Sonatas. Several of his recordings are from the early 1930's. He is one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard, to hear him live must have been extraordinary.

You find Hamelin "fast and fiery"?  I find him cold and reserved, but what the heck.
Medtner, man.

There is a recording of Medtner playing his Sonate-Ballade Op. 27, made in 1947 in London. I have it on a disc of the French label company Dante, with two cd's of Medtner's own recordings. I don't know about any other releases.
