My Recital 6 months Later
on: March 11, 2006, 11:14:06 AM
OK, for my project, I decided to be really cheap and plan a piano recital, but of course, to fit the criterion, i will have to play songs that I don't know

The recital has to be 1.5 hours to 2 hours (including intermission, about 15 minutes)
The audience is anybody from children to adults at school.

Ok, I am about ATCL level (barely there)

Here are the pieces in my mind, and very likely subject to change(not in order)

Liszt - Mephisto Waltz no.1
Chopin - Waltz in E Minor Op.Posth [done]
Prokofiev - Suggestion Diabolique [75% done]
Scriabin - prlude op11 nr 14 in Eb minor [perhaps first piece to open with]
Rimsky Karsakov - FLight of the bumblebee arr. Rachmaninoff [encore][done]
Moszkowski - Etudes Virtuositie No2 in Gminor [encore perhaps]
and No6 in F major [good encore too] [done]
Bartok - Allegro Barbaro
Chopin - Scherzo 1/2/3 (deciding)
MAYBE Chopin - Ballade No3 in Ab major

Well that is a lot of pieces, I need more major works and some of that needs to be cut

I need to learn all that in 6 months time, and I practice regularly. I know some of the pieces already.

I am fine at octaves, btw

Any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You need at least one sonata!I would suggest Mozart or Beethoven maybe Haydn. Choose one of the easier ones off the ATCL list which is circa 15-20 mins complete. You could then do a group of Chopin pieces Ballade 3 a couple of waltzes and then a Scherzo. You could open with a group of three or 4 scriabin preludes (not all the most difficult ones - mix and match) Or a Toccata of bach would be my other suggestion maybe the e minor one (circ 10mins) not impossible (in fact i think it has been ATCL before now) That all brings you up to about an hour then 15min intermission You need 30 to 45 mins more!!! You could go prokofiev and do the suggestion diabolique and then follow that with a child friendly selection from the romeo and juliet suite (some of which arent too difficult to learn fast!) and then maybe wrap up with a piece by his classmate Rachmaninov (flight of bumble bee) or an etude tableux or something to crow the recital.  Be very carefull not to play every piece upto your current level because 2 hrs is a long recital and you will find it VERY taxing if everything is at the edge of your ability! Thats my warning.  BUT good luck with it!

I mostly play 20th century or occasionally, some very late romantic, classical and baroque and early romantic is not too much of my style. I also prefer to play bashy and fast songs.
Yes, i am imbalanced, sams with the program

But i do agree that I need a fugue, what is a simple yet impressive sounding fugue for my level?

Ok as stands........
Scriabin prelude
Mozart sonata
Ginestera danzas Argentine
Chopin (id choose no 3)
-----interval--------
Prokofiev Suggestion Diabolique
Liszt Mephisto Waltz

If you think you can bring this programme off in the time fram Go for it but I have to say it is considerably harder than ATCL.  It will require a lot of stamina to play too so you should try to get the pieces up and running asap so you get plenty of practice at running through.

Thank you so much for your inputs pianowelsh

I am having quite some trouble with Mephisto Waltz, but I I guess I will set my mind to it.
I mostly agree with your program but here is my version

Scriabin prelude [1 minute]
Mozart sonata [i have learnt turkish march] [15 minutes?]
Ginestera danzas Argentine [7 minutes]
Chopin (id choose no 3) [I am leaning and starting on #2 because it seems to be more liked] (okok, i know its overplayed) [10 minutes]
-----interval--------
Scriabin/Rachmaninoff Prelude (if its rach, then the C#minor one will be great, which i have already learnt) [1.5 minutes/4.5minutes]
Prokofiev Suggestion Diabolique [2.5 minutes]
Liszt Mephisto Waltz [13 minutes?]

50 to 53 minutes

I think I will do Philip Glass - Mad Rush

It is 15 minutes long and it sounds very impressive and very easy to learn.
I sightread through the song today already in 30 minutes.

It is great fun, now comes the memorizing part of that piece

WHere can i cram in the piece in the program?
