Focusing during the day
on: March 16, 2006, 06:08:32 AM
Hello all,
I can focus for hours on end in the evening and late at night, but during the day, for some reason, I can't focus at all. I'm on Spring Break this week and I haven't been able to practice nearly as much as I want for this reason. I have no car during the day, so I can't even leave the house, but I can't seem to sit down and practice as long as the sun is out.
Does anyone else have this problem or ideas for how to concentrate during the day?

Lo there Tac-Tics,
Now that you mention it, this might be happening to me. I can certainly get on with learning a new piece in the day, at night I would presume you are naturally a little more tired or something. Mentally tired, or rested, in such a way you can't focus subconciously on what you are doing.
Atleast that's my random thoughts on it, I should really put this to the test by alternating the times I practise. I don't sit down at the piano unless I have a drink on the shelf next to me though, and comfortable, and my hands aren't cold!! (Clavinova's in the House Conservatory). So maybe eliminate all these small things that may distract or make your lesson time unpleasant in some way
Then the piano and related material should be the focus!
Or I'm completely wrong ^_^;;

I have actually had the same problem. It seems I can't really get anything done during daytime. I have found two ways to reduce the effect:
1) I have actually changed the sleeping style during my holidays, I go to bed at 6am and get up ~3pm. That leaves me hell alot of night-time to play with
2) Just play. Even if you can't focus. Over time you can focuse more and more.

Simple remedy for it, wake up before dawn and start practicing. Before you know it it will be day time and you're still practicing and you know you will be too tired in the evening to play.
It is always refreshing to rise with the sun and settle down for rest as it sets. I can see the attraction of studying in the dead of night, for one it is so quiet and you usually won't get a telephone call or door knock to disturb you. The quietness appeals to me a lot, I hate practicing and hearing a automobiles roar past. But you look outside you have only evening, darkness surrounding you. Maybe if you study dark and gloomy pieces this is ideal. I like go outside for a walk during the day, observe life around me, animals doing their thing, people busy etc.
