Appropriate encore for recital

Hey everyone,

I am hoping that someone can suggest a good encore that suits my programme for a concert at the beginning of June.  I know the pieces I am playing like the back of my hand, so I have some time to learn a really good encore. Suggestions?

Here is my program:

Haydn - Sonata in G major Hob XVI: 27 (15 mins.)
Scriabin - Preludes Op. 11 Nos. 7-12 (15 mins.)
Chopin - Etudes Op. 25  No. 9 & 10 (6-7 mins.)

INTERMISSION

Schumann - Carnival Op. 9 (30 mins.)

END

ENCORE???

Gnomenreigen would be a good encore, and a Chopin prelude would be nice too. I think go with a softer/slower one though, say 4, 6, 14 or 15. Maybe not 15, as I would have thought that to be included in the program, and the audience might feel a bit strange hearing it as an encore; but you never know, go with whatever you feel like.

I think end with some Gershwin of somekind, or something jazzy/bluesy so the audience have something to hum whilst they walk out.

there are tons of good encore pieces...are you looking for a dramatic, moving piece...fast, showy piece...etc.?

I don't really know what I'm looking for...that's why I asked for suggestions   But an overwhelming preference for Gershwin so far.  Thanks a lot everyone!

A volodos or godowsky transcription perhaps. Maybe the tango from godowsky\albeniz, or the polka italienne from volodos\rachmaninoff. They make good encore pieces

Horowitz/Bizet: Carmen
Many Rachmaninov preludes: op 23 nos. 2, 5, 7 .etc.
Volodos/Mozart: Alla turca
Mozkowsky: etincelles, any of the etudes.
Other than these, many of the slower pieces make good encores (especially if you are playing more than one)
Schubert/Liszt: Any of the lieder (I like Litanei)
Pachelbel: Canon in D (Own arrangement, maybe!)
Liszt: Liebestraume
Schumann: Anything from Kinderscenen.
....the list is endless!

I'd second the gershwin preludes, their excellent, and the third one is very impressive.

Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 or No.6. Maybe Grand Galop Chromatique.
Liszt is often a good option for an encore !!

Some encores I've heard recently include Scarlatti sonatas, Prokofiev's "Suggestion Diabolique", Villa Lobos "Three Maries" , Chopin Etude, Op. 25, No.1, Mompou "Cancion y Danzas".

Almost more important than what you choose is that you play the hell out of it.  You can use a favorite older piece that you know will send everyopne home happy.  The encore should not be stressful for you to prepare - your program is big enough!

Two examples.

I recently saw JeanYves Thibaudet play at carnegie hall.  he played three encore.  The first was chopin's Bb minor nocturne, which was awful.  Not an awful piece or a bad choice of encore, but he played it very badly.  However he then came out and played Debussy's Claire de Lune quite well, so mostly all was forgiven.

Last year at my school a student played the Schumann concertpo with Orchestra.  I did not fell that iot was an excellent performance, however, for an encore he played an incredible (I think it was his own) arrangement of "Silent Night".  The performance stuck with me for days, just because of that one minute of beautiful playing . . .

So, the encore counts for a lot.

I second the Albeniz-Godowsky Tango.  <-- Love it!

You might want to also consider Godowsky's arrangements of the Chopin Waltzes.  Very rarely performed, but so beautiful!

Something short and sweet.  Dont do something like hungarian rhapsody no. 2 or Grand Galop Chromatique, as was suggested.  That is like holding a dinner party and stuffing more main courses down people's throats after they say they are full.  Offer them a mint instead..

If you want to go in the Liszt direction, do Schumann-Liszt: Widmung or Consolation No. 2.

I agree with others and say Gershwin is a good composer for encores.  Something charming just to say good night.  Stay away from stuff with lots of diminished chords and poundy-poundy passages.

Ravel - Jeux Deux would be a surprise/thrill to people


La Campanella is always a great encore, but I'd actually agree with Chopin prelude 16 as well, that'd be a good one.

My favorite encore is the Rach transcription of the Mendelssohn "Scherzo" for a Midsummer-Night's Dream".  Start practicing very soon!

This is probaly not a good suggestion.. but mabye a Brahms Intermezzo?

One of the more demanding works in contemporary ragtime, perhaps something by David Thomas Roberts, Hal Isbitz or Frank French. Frank's "Bucktown Buck" would go down well as an encore. Excellent transcriptions are now available of the big Waller solos. "Handful of Keys" or "Gladyse" would be a good ending and a nice contrast to the classical works.

Also seriously take a look at Alkan's op. 31 preludes - if you're looking to go simple, not flashy, as kind of winding the performance down, then there's few better.

there's this transcription of Gluck melody from orpheus by Sgambati. ur audience will cry with this one!

u can try a movement from Bach Partitas and Suites, there are a lot of enjoyable melodies in there.

or gershwin song transcriptions such as "i've got rhythm", etc.



haha, i remember having to give an encore because they wanted to hear some more, but i was so tired with my program, so i gave them Chopin Funeral March... and they didn't ask for more after that. hehe
