something dramatic
on: March 18, 2006, 03:30:05 PM
Ok.  I'm still looking for a Romantic work.   I would like something in the 10-20 minute range.  I have already played Mendelssohn Fantasie in F-sharp Op 28, and I have already played the Bach-Busoni Chaconne, but that's the type of thing I'm looking for.  Any suggestions?  Actually, I'll even take suggestions for modern.  One note - I have small hands, and my teacher wants to be careful of HUGE stuff, though I cheat on some of it.

You could do a Chopin Ballade or a Scherzo.  The Liszt Ballade No. 2 is wonderful as well.

If you can do the Busoni, go for the Liszt Don Juan Fantasie.

I just played the Don Juan for 2 pianos last week.   :-\  So that one won't work.

Cesar Franck - Prelude, Chorale and Fugue.  I don't know how that is with big stretches though.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

The Liszt Ballade No. 2 is wonderful as well.
I play this one right now.  it is about 15 minutes and flows very nicely from section to section.  It is surprisingly comfortable to perform, even though it is a longish piece.  Definitely recommend this one.

If youcan play the Busoni with "small hands," you probably don't have much trouble with large spans.

More suggestions:

Busoni-Bach - Toccata in D minor
Godowsky - Passacaglia on Schubert's Unfinished Symphony
Liszt - Fantasie on Two Themes from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro.
Ravel - La Valse

The D-B-A-F#-E arpeggio sucks though ^^ . But indeed, I started the second Liszt ballade some weeks ago and it's fun to practice, and it is really beautiful too :) .

I like La Valse.  Actually I do have trouble with large spans and I generally leave out notes that I can't reach if I can't redistribute.  No one usually notices though.  Ocassionally I roll the chord if it doesn't break the line to do so.

5-4-3-2-1-5-4-3-2-1 etc works very well there.
