Myaskovsky sonatas 2 and 3
on: March 22, 2006, 07:37:39 AM
Both are brilliant, and sadly... totally ignored.

Richter's recording of the third is so wonderful, and I have a solid recording of the 2nd from Boris Lvov.

Richter said the 3rd is difficult to play, and that one of his teachers made him practically shed tears when he performed it so well, because he felt he could never play it at that level. The 2nd is more about melody and the 3rd is more about rhythm.

The 3rd Sonata is brilliant, I'd love to hear the 2nd.

CD Aurophon Classics AU 31474 US: B. Lvov (piano) (recording: 1991)

Idil Biret has recorded both of them, too. I'm going to see if I can track the recording down.

I've only heard a live Richter recording, but I love it. I'm going to see if I can find more of his recordings, because he played it live more than once.

Here's an mp3 of the performance:
