Occasional mistakes
on: March 24, 2006, 02:20:29 AM
I don't know what to do. I am studying Scarlatti's K027 Sonata, I have got the notes. I play it pretty well, but there is always an occasional mistake somewhere. What do I have to do to elliminate the mistakes? They seem to be random.
Do I have to play it slowly until I can play it from the 1st measure to the last one without any mistake?
I need help! as soon as I can polish it I will post it in the Audition Room  ;D

It could be that your technique isn't what it needs to be, but most likely based on what you're saying, you're probably just playing it at tempo too often.  Slow it down and play it twice slow and once just in your head for every time you play it at tempo.

Wandering mind perhaps?

It wouldn't be something technical unless you were repeatedly making the same mistakes... Like always messing up in the same section, or on a wide leap.

If not, you can practice it slowly and perfectly to better train the hands, as well as simply focusing more while playing.

and sometimes mistakes just happen. Often actually. Just beware that you don't fall too far into note-perfection, because that can come at the expense of attention to expression.

A few slips won't matter if all the notes that came out right were played beautifully.

Random but often mistakes mean you are playing to fast.  Don't rush yourself.  The slower you play, the quicker your fingers can coordinate themselves to play faster.  So you will actually learn much faster if you play much slower.  Keep that in mind for all your songs :)
Good luck!

I have a similar problem...

I almost always make slip ups during concerts or exams; people may not hear all of them but I certainly do and used to feel mortified until a couple of years ago but I still feel bad about it someimes since I am able to play the piece with all the notes and expression, no slip ups, at home.

Is it just stress, not actually being thorough enough or lack of concentration that causes the slip ups in this case?

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I do not care too much about a single mistake...

My problem is that very often, a mistake is followed by a cascade of mistakes (and the disaster)...When i hit a wrong note, being my hand used to the relative distance to the next key, it is pretty common to also play the next note wrongly, and so on... :-[ :-[

So, i beleive, it is of extreme importance the ability to isolate the mistake in such a way that it doesnt affect the remaining of the phrase. Easy to say, of course... ::) ::)

Sounds pretty normal to me... anyone else struggle with this at least occasionally?  ;D
