Dramatic, angry, agitated music! Help me find some?
on: March 27, 2006, 08:44:51 PM
Well, the title says it all.  ;D

I am looking for some angry, dramatic pieces that are either underplayed or obscure, preferably from Romantic or Contemporary eras (although I am open-minded!), and of any difficulty. Fast or slow, doesn't matter, as long as it's a real showstopper, and a POWERFUL piece.  :o

I find I am relating far too much to Liszt's transcendental etudes lately (Molto Agitato is one of my favorite songs of all time..)... it's about time I branch out and find some new alternatives to lash my anguish upon!

Any suggestions?

oh, so much to choose from! But since I am from Norway I suggest a norwegean composer - Edvard Grieg --> March of the trolls, I really like this! I think you should try something norwegean! :0)

I would recommend The Ghostship by Karl Tausig.

That is angry, dramatic and definately obscure, although it has been recorded.

Brilliant piece by Liszt's greatest pupil and of obscene difficulty.

Bartok's Allegro Barbaro, or perhaps something by Ornstein.

3rd movement of Prokofiev's piano sonata no. 7.

A real show-stopper.

Dissonance + ridiculous chords + 7/8 key signature =  :o

I was recently working on this and learned all but the last three pages, which were unplayable and entirely beyond me technically, unfortunately.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies! I am going to check them out.  ;D

I love the Mephisto Waltz No. 1... I got a copy of it from the Music Library a few years ago..took a few looks at it, and nearly pulled my hair out of my head. It seems impossible, especially for my small hands  :-[

Try Mendelssohn's Fantasy in F-sharp minor, 3rd movement.

Rodion Schedrin's Basso Ostinato
Beethoven's Appassionata (Op.57)
Chopin's 2nd ballade (the Sturm und Drang, though some parts are peaceful)
Liszt's Mazeppa is pretty furious, too
