Pieces less than one minute length
on: March 29, 2006, 09:16:58 PM
I would like to compile a list of short works by master composers.  I don't want any technical exercises, but real pieces of music.  I am looking for works that are one minute, or less in length, all styles and levels are o.k.  The reason for this that right now I don't have a lot of time to practice.  I feel that memoriziang lots of short pieces with varied technical problems and playing them every day would help my technique a lot.  Pieces less than one minute or less are good because in 30 minutes I could play lots of different types of music.  I thought about memorizing all the Bach two part inventions, you could play through all them quickly.  Any suggestions?

less than a minute?  ;D  how about the minute waltz played fast?

don't limit yourself to time.  just pages.  count them.  if there are more than four - just say forget it.  ok.  i'm joking.  how about a few really difficult pieces mixed in with some easier ones?  otherwise you'll doom yourself to boredom and soon feel like you could just as easily get along with a midi keyboard of shorter length.

I'm not too sure how long this piece is, but it's fairly short (less than 2 minutes); Albumblatt, Friedrich Grutzmacher.  It's a pretty cute piece, which focuses mainly on arpeggios (don't worry, it DOES have a melody), but you can play it as a study.
If it gets boring, (here's what my teacher suggested to me) just play every second bar, as of that were the piece.  It'll help you focus more on reading every single note, which eventually helps you read music faster somehow (don't know how THAT works)...

One of the Tcherepnin Bagatelles does and I think one of the Shostakovich Op. 34 Preludes clocks in at around a minute.

Scriabin Op.11 No.14

Make sure to have very long pauses inbetween all these pieces. At least that would be my preference.

You mean that lovely 'bagatelle' with the hideous octaves?  lol  Was going to play it for my music exam this May but realise I wasn't going to hack it.  =)  Pity, I reckon it sounds cool.

How about some Alkan? His Esquisses Op 63 has quite a few under 1 min:

No 3 - Les Cloches
No 17 - Petit Prélude à 3
No 23 - L'Homme aux Sabots
No 25 - La Poursuite
No 26 - Petit Air
No 27 - Rigaudon
No 28 - Inflexibilité
No 29 - Délire
No 31 - Début de Quator
No 33 - Fais Dodo
No 37 - Scherzettino
No 40 - Attendez-Moi Sous L'Orme
No 42 - Petit Air
No 44 - Transports
No 46 - Le Premier Billet Doux

Or maybe some Preludes from Op 31
No 10 - Dans le Style Fugue
No 11 - Un Petit Rien
No 19 - Priere du Matin
And if you're willing to go up to 1.5 minutes, this is a slower one that I like more than those three:
No 12 - Le Temps Qui N'est Plus

A few other suggestions-

Bartok:
Six Romanian Folk Dances - Nos 1, 2, 3 & 4
Sonatina
14 Bagatelles - Nos 1-4

Scriabin:
Prelude No 2 from Op 2
Prelude No 3 from Op 22
Prelude No 22 from Op 11

The Two Part Inventions are a good idea.  My favorite is No 13.  I'm working on it now.

Chopin's 1st Prelude?  Beautiful - not easy though.

Schumann's Kinderscenen has a few under 1 min.

I know you say "all levels and styles", but it would have been helpful to know what level you've reached.  If you've only played the Anna Magdalena Bach notebook, then there's no point in recommending Chopin's Etudes.

I hope at least a few in this list suit your purposes.

Best wishes,
Raymond

If you consider the different parts , each character of Schumann's carnaval runs at about the one minute mark.

Also:
Chopin Preludes - a lot of Chopin in general is on the short side
Scriabin Preludes
Bach Inventions
Some Debussy Preludes

Gershwin III runs about 40-45 seconds if you play it at tempo.

Many of Grieg's Norwegian Folk Songs fit the bill.  I particularly like Op. 66 #3 (A King Rules in the East) and 4 (Siri-Dale Song), neither of which are overly difficult technically.

Scriabin's Prelude Op. 15 No. 3 is a nice one to play. If you play it at tempo, you can play it under a minute, like Kissin plays it:

That Shostakovich prelude you are referring to is probably op.34 no.5 in D major, which is a quick, breathless perpetual motion.
