Another great thing to play!
on: November 10, 2001, 11:05:23 PM
Iīm just a bit curious....
Since I am a great fan and admirer of the noble game of chess, I would like to take the opportunity to see if the combination piano-chess is world-wide, or if itīs just me?
So... What do you say? Isnīt actually a great game of chess (and for the moment I prefer games starting with 1.f4!) one of the best things you could do?
Those of you who doesnīt agree should either:
a) learn the rules and get on with some playing
or
b)try again.
;)

Well, if Frederic Chiu, the Paris-based American pianist can graduate with honours in Computer Science as well as in Music (what a combination!) the piano-chess combination seems just a tad tame. ;)
As far as I can make out the idea in both piano and chess appears to be to hit the right key/square at the right time. :-/

Its certainly a rare combination of bilateral brain dominance to be able to graduate in both Computer Science and Music.

I love chess. I use to play all the time. I placed 3rd in my state (tx) at a chess tournametn. It can be hard at times to allow the artistry to come out of me when playing the piano, but if you continue to try you would be surprised how beautiful the music can be.

Mark Taimanov was a grandmaster (got his butt kicked by Fischer in the candidates of 69, I believe) and a concert pianist.  Oistrakh was also of master strength.
Harold Shoenberg wrote a very interesting article comparing these two loves of his life.

For me, Computer Studies major, Psychology minor. But those are nothing compared to the following, in terms of my abilities:

1. playing the piano
2. doing woodwork and joinery
3. massaging (foot, body), and yes, I give massage as well as get massaged
4. playing Chinese Checkers
5. eating sushi and sashimi
6. cooking
7. procrastinating . . .

I think music has more in common with science than with other arts, in terms of brain activity.

I always wanted to play 'real' chess. I just don't think my brain is build for it though. I tried really hard but I didn't see much improvement.

Fischer is an amazing personality.
