My Sauter Delta has arrived!
on: April 07, 2006, 06:48:00 PM
After a four month wait, my Sauter Delta has finally arrived. The five man piano moving team had to haul it up 24(!) stories for 2 hours, before finally getting the 330kg hulk of a Sauter Delta up to my apartment. The moving fees were substantial (around S$3.5K roughly US$2.2K), although I paid them through the dealer, rather than to the movers directly. These guys certainly deserved every penny they took, and I was glad to give it! The whole process took around 2 hours, with lots of huffing, puffing, and a number of expletives spewed along the way!
As for the piano itself, apparently my Delta is the last model to incorporate Sauter's accelerated action, as most customers have preferred the standard action. It is difficult to articulate how exactly this action is different from the standard action, but I would describe it as being more "bouncy" (more emphasis on the upward motion of the key), whereas the standard action is a little softer/spongier to my fingers. I would describe the standard action as being quite similar to a Bosendorfer action. At least that was the experience with the other standard action piano that was in the Sauter showroom, during my selection. Apparently, additional modifications were made to my Delta in the 3 months before delivery.
Also the sound of my Sauter is extremely clear and sweet (think Perrier, or champagne!), a little closer to Schimmel, but more powerful in the bass. Not at all like the thick and warmer sound of the accelerated action Delta (like a thick black coffee?). Apparently, most of the other accelerated action Deltas have this crystalline clear quality as well, though Ulrich disagreed that the tone of this Delta was different - only the action, he said.
What remains to be done are:
1) Optimising the room configuration to get the best sound possible. I had done some serious acoustic treatment in my bedroom for fear that the Delta would overwhelm the room. I've got some serious acoustic panelling on the walls, and thick velvet stage curtains at the window, with a mattress behind the curtain, a rubber seal for my door, and an inch thick rug underneath the piano. As it turns out, this dampening may be too effective...I'm losing some of the impressive bass (even though I know its there, its muted. Maybe I'll remove the mattress or open the curtains. The good thing about all the acoustic panelling is that the room is virtually soundproofed - I can play at 1-2am and not be heard even within the house!
2) Waiting for the first tuning and regulation, which will be in 11 days time. Its slightly out of tune, so its not yet performing optimally, even though the potential is obvious. Regulation wise, some fine tuning to the key depth (for even greater responsiveness in soft/floating playing) and the una-corda pedal - 2 strings vs 2 1/2 strings - I like a much more distinct change in colour. With the una corda on, I would like a much warmer, mellower, and even "blurry" sound.
3) Posting the pictures! This I promise to do so, once I'm able to transfer the photos from my digicam to the PC!
