Fingering on Haydn's 42nd
on: April 11, 2006, 02:36:32 PM
The following bars are taken from Haydn's piano sonata number 42 (third movement: presto). The key is G major. I added the two possible fingerings i'm considering for each of the 4 cases in which I have doubts, in different colors, so that you can easily answer, for example: "case A: blue. case B: black, etc". Of course, any other suggestions will be considered as well.
Thanx a lot for your time.

The first thing to say is that everyone's hands and fingers are different, so there usually isn't just ONE way to finger something. So without SEEING you play, I can't say for sure, but you are probably your best judge, as long as it sounds like it should.
For case A, I myself would do 5321 5321, 3521
For case B, they are detached, so it really doesn't matter, but I would do 1/2, 1/2, 1/3, 2/4, 3/5
For case C, which ever fits your hands better
For case D, I would do 4 5 1 1 4 3 2 1 2 5, which may seem weird, but that's how it would fit MY hand.
It seems like you know what you're doing. I would try 5321 for Case A and see how that fits

cjp_piano: Thank you very much for your answer. It's been very helpful.
Regarding what you said about:
Case A: I've tryed your way, and it fit's a lot better. I'll use it.
Case B: I don't know what you mean by "detached", but let me clarify that those marks are accents, not staccato marks (don't let the bad quality of the picture confuse you). Does the fingering you recomended still apply?
Case C: not really a problem
Case D: I'll stick to my way, but thanx.

Glad I could help.
Regarding the "detached", I just meant that they aren't slurred, so you don't have to try to connect them with legato fingering. The fingering I suggested just makes sense for me, but 1/3 2/4 1/3 2/4 3/5 would work, or whatever really.
Sorry for the confusion.
