i had to watch it several times and still get confused as to where to hop and where to skip.   they do dance it beautifully.  it's just not practical.  that's why it declined and died out.  too many leg injuries.  out of it flowed the 'bunny hop.'

Hmm.

According to that logic, most sports should have died out by now due to the many injuries players sustain whilst playing them.

But clearly, that isn't the case! :)

I think the reason it died out is because composers moved away from composing mazurkas, or at least composing mazurkas meant for dancing. It is perhaps natural that people want to dance to music of 'the time'- thus the evolution of dance to fit the music. Which is why people now "dance" to stuff like rap.

As far as I know many composers wrote pieces based on the rhythms of dance forms without the intention to write music that should be danced to instead of listened to.

I prefer listening to music. I think one should dance without any music.

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
