Free Notation Software?
on: April 14, 2006, 06:19:48 AM
Hi guys, apart from the software sold in stores, do you know if there is any FREE notation software that is easily available on the internet or would it be better to buy it? I am not very computer literate and don't know what is the best software out there. Thks.

Sure they're a lot, but they're too simplistic. In most of them for example, you can't add grace notes, and you can only add trills, etc.

The best one for me it's the Midinotate Composer, but it's a 30 day shareware trial. The latest version doesn't come with a manual. Look for older versions, where you can download the manual only.

Finale NotePad 2006 is available for free download from www.codamusic.com

Whether or not it is adequate for your needs, I don't know.

You can use lilypond, which is as comprehensive as any of the pay packages.  Works great for piano and quite well for complicated scores, like orchestral scores with parts. It has a text interface though and most people consider it harder to use.  I've used it for a number of projects, and it's the only format they accept on the mutopia project site.
