Gonna see Idil Biret live tomorrow
on: April 16, 2006, 12:36:31 AM
I am going to a piano recital by Idil Biret tomorrow !! I am looking forward to see her for the first time after all what i heard about her.

She will play an interesting programme.

Programme
Bach/Kempff     Siciliano from Flute Sonata in E Major BWV 1031

                           Chorale from Cantata BWV 147

                           Choral Preludes BWV 307 & 734

Chopin               12 Etudes op.25

Intermission

Rachmaninov    Four Moments Musicaux op.16

                                   nos. 1,2,5,6,

Ligeti                 Two Etudes

                                    no.2 Cordes a vide

                                    no.6 Automne ل Varsovie

Stravinsky         The Firebird ballet (selections)

                                    Introduction

                                    Danse de l’oiseau de feu

                                    Ronde des princesses

                                    Danse infernale

                                    Berceuse

                                    Finale

I listened to her Chopin Etudes op.25 recordings, but they were the worst i ever heard actually !! ??? So slow and so lazy.
I hope she doesn't play like that tomorrow

I think her whole approach to Chopin is a slow and sensitive one.

Based on a little of her Chopin I have heard I am kind of suprised that she has Ligeti and Stravinsky in this program.

I have her recording of The Firebird (complete) played on solo piano (Naxos CD) and I love it. However, I also have recordings of hers I can't stand to listen to, and I don't really care for most of her Ligeti etudes. So good luck to her.

I went to the concert. She was  :o  :o  :o

I think she is one of the greatest living pianists today. Although she is 65 years old, she can play such a demanding programme. Stravinsky and Ligeti was mouthwatering. Although i thought her Chopin Etudes were somehow slow, i must admit that she really captured the spirit of Chopin.

Just look at her repertoire !!! https://www.idilbiret.org/ENG/IBe09frame.htm
Isn't this almost 99% of all the piano repertoire in history ??

I always found her playing kind of sloppy - I mean, Horowitz and Cziffra are sloppy too, but they have truly great moments in their playing.

I have her live recording of Donizetti-Liszt: La Marche pour le Sultan Abdul Medjid-Khan (One of my favorite pieces of all time, btw) and it such a raucous mess.  I think even Leslie Howard played this better.

But Im glad you were pleasantly surprised at her concert. 65 years old?? I had no idea she was so old..

Personally I wouldn't see her play even if someone paid me, let alone me actually paying to see her...

Oh, c'mon.

Perhaps she's great live, as kghayesh's response indicates.

I would go, even just to find out.

You made me curious to watch you play Waldszenen, if you said that for Idil Biret.
Don't you have any recordings so that we can figure out what IS good playing ?? ;D

Don't worry, I'm not better than Idil Biret or anything like that, I'm just another snobby critic. =)
